The Superbowl isn’t just another big sporting final, it’s arguably the biggest annual domestic sports contest in the world. And though tens of millions of NFL fans watch it worldwide on TV for the joy of it, it’s also big business at the best betting sites all over the world.  And none more so than in 2024.

Whereas it’s virtually impossible to get an estimate of how much money was wagered on Superbowl LVIII worldwide because there were 100s of different Sportsbooks in dozens of countries laying odds on it, there appears to be a consensus regarding how much was bet on it within the USA. Spoiler alert: it’s a lot.

What happened in the 2024 Superbowl?

In a repeat of the 2020 Superbowl in terms of the teams contesting it, the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs played at the Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, the first-ever Super Bowl to be contested in the state of Nevada.

It was won by the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime (25-22) allowing them to defend their title in the process.

How much money was wagered in the US on the 2024 Superbowl?

The American Gaming Association (AGA) estimated that 23.1 billion US Dollars was wagered on the game in the US, including bets placed on: the money line, spreads, points totals, player prop bets and specials, including those involving the girlfriend of Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce, none other than pop star Taylor Swift; more on her in a bit.

Some of those wagers were placed with legal US-based Sportsbooks, with estimates saying they accounted for approximately 1.25-1.5 billion US Dollars.

But that astounding figure of 23.1 billion also includes other types of Superbowl-related betting, such as:

    • With illegal bookies based in the US.
    • With overseas betting companies accessed with the use of a VPN that are technically illegal for US-based customers to bet at.
    • Wagers placed among friends, family and colleagues, including sweepstakes and the ‘Squares’ game.

The AGA also estimated that around 68 million Americans, roughly 1/4 of all adults in the country, were planning on betting on the game, although an exact figure wasn’t available even in the aftermath of the match.

Which were the eye-catching bets placed that were placed?

Here are some off the bigger, some would say crazier, bets placed ahead of the big game.

    • 540,000 USD bet on the Chiefs +4.5 (-180) line by a gambler in Michigan.
    • 1 million USD placed on the 49ers money line (-120).
    • 100,000 USD bet struck on the coin toss to land as ‘tails’ at the start of the match.
    • 15,000 USD wagered on Chiefs Wide receiver Rashee Rice to be the unlikely MVP, given the odds were 65-1.

Why was there an increase in the total amount wagered in relation to last year?

According to gambling analyst Chris Grove, a partner at Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, the reason for that 35% increase year-on-year is very simple:

"There's a good chance that every Super Bowl for the next ten or so years will be the most bet Super Bowl thanks to the underlying growth of regulated sports betting in the U.S.,"

In other words, US NFL betting fans have welcomed the new, legal, regulated Sportsbooks that also ensure transparency, accountability and greater security than when most betting (with the exception of Sportsbooks in the likes of New Jersey and Nevada) was done with illegal bookies prior to 2018, the year it was legalised in many US states. Advertising, bonuses and a better customer experience also played their part.

But it’s also worth highlighting the added interest in the Superbowl on the back of the “Taylor Swift effect” with millions of new fans taking an interest for the first time simply because of who the Pop Queen was dating, and her presence at the game.
