There are all kinds of interesting bets that you can place on horse racing, but the superfecta is one of the most popular. You’ll usually find it under the ‘exotic bets’ section of your favourite betting platforms.
So, what is a superfecta bet? Simply, it’s a bet on the first four horses to finish a race. There are a surprising number of different variations of a superfecta that you can place. So, we’re going to explain all of those, as well as give you some tips on how to see greater success with your superfecta wagering.
What is a Superfecta Bet?
A superfecta in horse racing is a bet on the first four horses to finish a race. The straight superfecta is what most of us think of, which is a bet on the first four horses to finish in the correct order. This is the most difficult of the superfecta variations to win, as you’ve got to predict not just the first four, but the winning order as well. We’ll cover some friendlier superfecta options in more detail below.
Types of Superfecta Bets
Now that you know what a superfecta bet is in horse racing, it’s time to learn about the different variations. There are five in total, each offering a different approach and importantly, different payouts. Let’s take a look.
Straight Superfecta
In superfecta betting, a straight superfecta is the most common option but, it’s also the hardest to win. For this type of bet, you need to predict the first four horses in the correct order.
Superfecta Key
A superfecta key is slightly easier than a straight superfecta, in that you need to pick the winner and then the next three horses in any order. This type of bet can be particularly useful in a race where there’s a very short priced favourite.
You can also choose additional horses to come in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place to increase your chances. However, this increases your stake.
Superfecta Full Wheel
The superfecta full wheel bet is just like a superfecta key, in that you need to get the winner right. Then, it covers all possible combinations of the first four horses in a race. However, in this bet you can’t add additional horses.
Superfecta Part Wheel
The superfecta part wheel bet requires you to pick a key horse to win, followed by a key horse to come second. Then, for positions three and four, you’re free to choose whichever horses you like. Usually, you’ll select four more horses and place bets that cover any combination of those four taking the final two places.
Boxed Superfecta
A superfecta box is the easiest type of superfecta to win, but also the most expensive. You pick four horses to finish in any order (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th). To do this, you need to place a bet on each combination, which totals up to 24. So whatever your stake would be on a straight superfecta, you need to multiply it by 24 to get your stake for a superfecta box.
Superfecta Betting Strategy
While it’s quite tricky to win a superfecta, hence the impressive payouts, there are some tips that can help improve your strategy. Below are some top tips for betting superfecta.
● Consider if you can box a superfecta to increase your chances of winning.
● If the race has a very short-priced favourite, consider keying your superfecta to give more flexibility to the last three places.
● As always, make sure to study the form of the horses and jockeys well in advance. This will help you to make an informed decision on your final selection.
Straight Superfecta vs. Boxed Superfecta
So what are the benefits and drawbacks of placing a straight superfecta versus a boxed superfecta horse bet? Let’s take a look!
Cost vs Payout
One of the key benefits of a straight superfecta is that you can win a lot of money from a very small stake. This is because the chances of correctly predicting a straight superfecta are very low.
On the other hand, a boxed superfecta costs 24x as much money to place, as you need to cover all possible combinations. This means your profits are lower.
Odds of Winning
The big benefit of placing a boxed superfecta is that your odds of winning the bet are dramatically increased. This is because there are now 24 possible combinations that could land you a win, rather than just one.
FAQ
Unlike a ‘normal’ bet, a superfecta is a parimutuel bet. This means that instead of betting at fixed odds (and knowing your payout before the race) you’re betting into a pool. Once the race is over, the winners are paid as a dividend. Because it’s so unusual to win a superfecta, often only one person gets the bet correct, meaning they can win huge payouts.
You’ll find the option to place a superfecta bet in the exotics section of your chosen sportsbook. You need to select the race that you’d like to have the bet in and then select a superfecta bet. Next, select all of the horses that you’d like to include in your bet and then enter your stake and confirm.
These type of bets tend to produce poor results, because they are so difficult to win. However, if you do strike it lucky and manage to predict the first four horses correctly, the prizes can be enormous.
