Variety is the spice of life, as they say, and following on from that, there are some very spicy bets to be placed at the best sports betting sites on the internet.
Many sports punters only deal in singles, while others like the traditional acca/multiple where all bets need to win in order for the whole bet to win. If it does, you’re likely to be paid out at big odds. Bet Builders, one of the most significant innovations of the last few years, is another favourite, with all selections relating to the same game.
But then there’s the Trixie bet. A more complex version of the traditional acca, it works in a very different way but is another staple, particularly at the best football betting sites.
So, what is a Trixie bet? How many bets are in a Trixie bet? How do you go about actually placing one and how does a Trixie bet work in terms of winning and losing on one? Let’s find out.
How Does a Trixie Bet Work?
A Trixie bet is made up of three selections. But it’s very different to a straight treble. With the latter you need all three selections to win for the bet as a whole to win. All three selections are multiplied by one another to get the total odds of the treble and it’s a real case of all or nothing.
Either the whole bet wins or it loses; it doesn’t make the slightest bit of difference whether you had one winning selection, two, or none.
So how does a Trixie work? The three selections are used to make up four bets. Each of the three selections is combined with another one to make up three doubles and then for good measure, the three selections are combined to make up a treble.
A Trixie bet is explained with real-life examples in the next section but for the time being, let’s call the selections A, B and C; it doesn’t matter what the selections are or what sport they’re on.
So, you’ll have three doubles:
- A/B
- A/C
- B/C
And then you’ll have a treble made up of each of the three selections:
- A/B/C
So that’s four bets in total and as per the Trixie betting rules, each one of those four bets is a completely separate bet from the others.
Trixie Bet Examples in Sports
Trixies can work for just about any sport or can be placed with selections from multiple sports. But let’s kick things off with a football example.
Your three selections are:
- Selection A: Juventus to beat Napoli @ 2.5
- Selection B: Over 2.5 goals in Barcelona v Villarreal @ 1.7
- Selection C: A sending off in Bayern Munich v Dortmund @ 3.5.
As per above, they make up three doubles- A/B, A/C, B/C - and a Treble: A/B/C.
- If all three selections won, you’d win on all four bets.
- If two won, you’d win on one of the doubles. Let’s say A and B won. A/B would then be a winning double but because C didn’t win, anything involving C would lose as a double (A/C, B/C) and as a treble (A/B/C).
- If just one won, or none, you’d lose on all four bets.
Whether in the case of two selections winning, you’d end up in profit, would depend on the odds of each of those two selections.
In the example above, A (2.5) and B (1.7) mean that the A/B double comes to 4.25. That would mean that 4.25 – 3 losing units would result in a win of 1.25. But that includes your stake, so the profit would actually be 0.25 units.
How to Place a Trixie Bet
The first step to placing a betting Trixie is deciding on your three selections.
Let’s say that on this occasion you want:
- England to beat India in a cricket ODI @ 2.0.
- Carlos Alcaraz to beat Novak Djokovic in a tennis match @ 2.5.
- South Africa to beat Australia in rugby union @ 1.9.
Once you’ve clicked on those three selections, the Sportsbook will offer you the choice of placing:
- A treble.
- 3x Doubles.
- A Trixie.
- A Patent.
Seeing as it’s the Trixie you want to place, that’s where you’ll enter your stake.
The stake you choose is for each of the four bets, because remember that a bet Trixie is made up of four bets, and the stake is the same for all four.
In other words, choosing a stake of 2 Units per bet would mean a total stake of 8 units.
Bets Similar to the Trixie Bet
Despite the treble also being made up of three selections, a reminder of the difference between a treble and a Trixie bet: the treble is just one bet where all selections need to win, the Trixie is made up of four bets that are settled independently of each other.
A patent bet is very similar to the Trixie with one big difference: in a patent bet the three selections are also placed as singles. With the other four bets being the same in both cases (3x doubles + 1x treble) the patent bet has the three singles as well, so seven bets in total.
But perhaps most similar of all to the Trixie bet is the Yankee bet. Unlike the patent bet, the Yankee doesn’t contain selections as singles. The Yankee bet is a Trixie with an extra selection, so four. These are then split into:
- 6 x Doubles.
- 4 x trebles.
- 1x fourfold
For a total of 11 bets.
