The Most Successful T20 Team of All Time

T20 has come a long way in a short space of time. It was formed in the early 2000s, but the explosive style of cricket favours the batters who like to launch it out of the park with huge sixes. The first international T20 game was contested between Australia and New Zealand in February 2005. The inaugural World T20 tournament was held in South Africa, and India were crowned champions.

This shorter form of the game has influenced club and international cricket, and more fans are glued to their TVs than ever before.

But which is the best T20 team of all time? After checking all relevant stats, we used specific performance criteria to determine the best from the rest. We have produced tables to illustrate our findings that should clear up any questions you may have.

Methodology

Deciding which is the best T20 team of all time isn’t something that is done lightly. No, there is a strict process we use. Of course, there are some cricketing nations that fans will be more familiar with.

108 members belong to the ICC. Only 12 of these are full-time members, while there are 96 associate members.

Throughout the calendar year, international T20s take place between nations, but to keep up to date, we use a variety of sources to track performances. ESPNcricinfo and HowStat are armed with win/loss ratios, while Khel Now has become more reliable for presenting accurate stats across games. They crunch down the numbers, and their stat experts leave no stone unturned.

The ICC, for example, when forming the rankings, uses a special rating method. It is calculated by dividing the points scored by the match/series total, and the answer is then rounded to the nearest whole number.

At SportsBoom, we prefer to use a win/loss (W/L) ratio and 50% of the weighting is based on World Cup performances. The more success that teams achieve in high-pressure situations, such as a World Cup, will carry more favour.

We also factor in away performances which helps us to reach more well-rounded evaluations about how a team may fare in testing conditions. For example, the sub-continent is known for having drier pitches which plays into the hands of spinners. Or, in other countries where pitches are slower, batters who have more time to pick up the flight of the ball score heavily.

The 10 Most Successful T20 Teams According to Web Critics

There are internet critics who spend hours watching live cricket, and they believe the following 10 teams are the best in T20. The period covered in the table mainly spans from 2006-2024, except for a few teams where the data track back to 2005. Our table highlights the overall records.

How We Ranked the Best T20 Team

Although web critics may have quibbled over certain details, their results show a simple but effective way to measure performances.

However, at SportsBoom, we prefer to look at the wider picture and take a broader view of things. As far as the best T20 team goes, we didn’t just use a win/loss ratio. We prefer to take a snapshot of more consistent performances over time, and that includes away results.

We also took into consideration success in major tournaments, looking at performances on the biggest stages. Essentially, half the total was dedicated to win/loss, and the other half was based on results at the World Cup. Then, we added both totals to give us an overall score out of 100.

This table is very different in terms of the rankings we decided upon compared to cricket critics. However, in many ways, it is a more measured approach to assessing the best T20 teams of all time.

Profiles of the Top Teams

Our table, as revealed above, drilled down things further. But what makes these T20 teams stand out? We have provided some mini profiles for the top 5 teams, discussing key moments in their history and big-name players to give you an idea.

India

With two World Cup victories under their belt, India have shown that they are a team that can perform when the stakes are at their highest.

At the 2024 World Cup in the USA, it went down to the wire. Virat Kohli hit 76, but Hardik Pandya delivered with the ball, picking up three wickets from three overs, and conceding 20 runs as India claimed a seven-run win over South Africa.

But they also have a habit of scoring big totals. In 2024, India had two totals over 280 against South Africa and Bangladesh respectively, and the quality of young bowlers coming off the production line is impressive.

England

Currently coached by Brendon McCullum, the man responsible for ‘Bazball’, which is an aggressive style of cricket used for fielding and batting, England are two-time World Cup winners.

The 2022 victory over Pakistan was thrilling as they won by five wickets, but their victory was marked by an unbeaten knock of 52 by Ben Stokes. With the ball, Sam Curran was the pick of the bowlers.

With plenty of flair, England will be hot on the heels of India, and a big 2025 is expected.

West Indies

Originally one of the most feared teams in the Test format, the West Indies are formidable when it comes to T20s.

Many of their players have excelled in the IPL, and Chris Gayle holds the record for the highest score in that competition (175 not out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore).

The WIndies are two-time World Cup champions, and to beat England in the 2016 Final was a major achievement. Rovman Powell, who is the current captain, has fared well with the bat against Bangladesh, averaging 46 from eight innings at the time of writing.

Pakistan

A dark horse, to a certain extent, Pakistan’s sole World Cup triumph came in 2009 when they thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Lord’s.

The country has a reputation for providing quick bowlers and that includes Umar Gul, who picked up 85 wickets in 60 T20 appearances.

Although Pakistan suffered a shock elimination in the first round of the World Cup, which included a defeat at the hands of hosts USA, they have proved over time they can rub shoulders with the best. They will only continue to improve.

Australia

Rounding off this list is Australia. Extremely competitive, the Aussies won’t give anyone an inch.

With big hitters at the top of the order, Australia has undergone some changes since David Warner and Matthew Wade retired from T20. The defeat to India in the Super Eight stage at the 2024 T20 World Cup influenced their decisions.

Australia, who won the World Cup in 2021, will be eager to add to their tally in the coming years.

Legacy and Impact of the Top Teams

Of the top T20 teams, India has done a lot to shake up the game. The IPL has a huge profile and it has helped focus attention on some of India’s growing stars, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal.

At the IPL auction, which is essentially a mini draft window, Indian players have fetched huge sums of money, and that includes Rishabh Pant.

England, meanwhile, have tried to push the game forward with their almost carefree approach to the game. We’re not just talking about quick singles but being on the front foot and turning over the scoreboard rapidly with lots of boundaries.

Canada and the USA have started to take more of an interest in T20 with the Global T20 Canada and Major League Cricket respectively. T20 has become a truly international game, and arguably it has overtaken Tests in terms of following.
