How to Bet on IPL 2024?

The IPL isn’t just one of the biggest annual sporting events of the year, it’s also one of the biggest betting heats of the year.

IPL Rules 

The first IPL-specific rule to be aware of is that teams can field up to four overseas players per match.

Fielding four non-Indian players in a team’s starting XI affects the Impact Player Rule in that a team with four overseas players can’t bring on another one as an Impact sub. An overseas player can only come on as an Impact sub if they only fielded three or fewer to begin with.

The Impact sub can come on for another player during any natural break in the match, such as: the start of an innings, the end of an over or at the fall of a wicket.

Other important IPL rules are that two points are awarded per win (one for each team if the match was called off) and that if a match is tied after 40 overs, it will go to a Super Over to determine the winner.

Teams are given two DRS reviews per match.

IPL League Structure

Ten teams contest the IPL every year.

They each play 14 matches in the group stage, after which the Top 4 progress to the Playoffs. The Top 2 play the Qualifier 1 with the winner of that going straight to the final.

The third and fourth-placed teams then face off in the Eliminator. The loser crashes out while the winner plays the loser of the Qualifier 1 in the Qualifier 2, for that second spot in the final. 

What Teams are in the IPL? 

In 2022 the Gujarat Titans and the Lucknow Super Giants were new franchises added to the IPL. They joined the eight existing ones, which are:

• Kolkata Knight Riders 
• Chennai Super Kings 
• Punjab Kings 
• Sunrisers Hyderabad 
• Mumbai Indians 
• Rajasthan Royals 
• Royal Challengers Bangalore

How to Read IPL Odds

One of the most important elements when it comes to how to bet online in IPL is understanding the odds.

Let’s say that in decimal odds, the Mumbai Indians are 6.0 to win the 2025 IPL.

That would equate to odds of 5/1 if you were using fractional odds, 500 if using American moneyline odds and in terms of implied probability, it would be 16.67%.

There’s no foolproof secret in terms of how to bet on IPL online…and win. Rather, you’ll need to do lots of research on the teams’ strengths and weaknesses, understand the conditions on the day, follow which key players are in form and place well-reasoned good value bets.

An IPL season lasts almost exactly two months and generally runs from the last week of March to the last week of May. 

When learning about how to bet in the IPL, it’s crucial to understand the difference between outright bets and match bets.

Outright bets relate to the tournament as a whole and include: IPL winner, IPL top batsman, IPL top wicket-taker, to make the final, and to finish bottom.

Match bets are specific to a particular match. They include: the match winner, the top batsman for each team in that match, the top wicket-taker for each team in the match, the number of fours and sixes hit in the game, what the first innings runs score will be and who will be voted the Player of the Match. 

With a couple of notable exceptions, all editions of the IPL have been played in India and the 2024 edition will be as well. All ten teams have a main home ground, meaning the following cities all host IPL matches:  Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Lucknow, Hyderabad and Bangalore.

However, some teams play their matches at more than one home ground. For example, the Rajasthan Royals, who play at both the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur and the ACA Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.
