South Africa vs Australia: The 438 Game

Midway through the fifth and final ODI against South Africa in 2006, Australia would have been riding high, but the Proteas brought them crashing down by the final ball.

Records fell in both innings as both countries put on a performance for the ages.

The match at the Wanderers in Johannesburg began with Australia winning the toss and electing to bat, led by half-centuries from openers Adam Gilchrist and Simon Katich.

Captain Ricky Ponting later joined in with a top score of 164 from 105 balls.

With the Proteas bowlers under siege, the fielding side’s experience was perhaps best summed up by Roger Telemachus’ disastrous string of four no-balls at the tail end.

It was not unreasonable to think the game was over before South Africa had faced a ball.

Australia ended their innings with the first-ever ODI total of above 400 and the highest-ever team total in ODI cricket with 434, leaving the Proteas shell-shocked.

However, Jacques Kallis’ quip in the dressing room might have made the difference: “Come on, guys: it's a 450-wicket. They're 15 short!"

Despite the early loss of Boeta Dippenaar for just one run, opener and skipper Graeme Smith stood steady alongside Herschelle Gibbs for a 187-run third wicket stand.

After the captain’s dismissal, AB de Villiers joined Gibbs at the crease.

Proteas coach Mickey Arthur had advised his team to aim for 185 from the first 25 overs but South Africa were almost 50 runs ahead at the halfway point.

When Gibbs was caught on 175, however, SA was still more than 130 runs short.

With South Africa needing 77 from 42 at one stage, reduced to 36 from 22 by a cameo by Johan van der Wath, the game came down to the last decisive over.

Brett Lee bowled the final six, with the Proteas eight wickets down.

With two runs needed, Makhaya Ntini scored a crucial single to leave Mark Boucher on strike, and the keeper’s last ball four over mid-on sparked rampant celebrations.

In a single game, Australia’s record total had been set and then surpassed.

South Africa claimed the highest successful ODI run chase in history, the highest team total in ODI second innings, and the game itself recorded the highest total score - 872.

Australia’s 434/4 broke the previous record held by Sri Lanka of 398/5, which was set against Kenya in 1996.

Netherlands vs West Indies: Super Over Finale

The Netherlands have been the epitome of sprightly minnows for many years, able to pull off the occasional upset but mostly failing to impress on the world stage.

However, the Dutch showed their potential in a crucial 2023 World Cup qualifier.

Sent in to bat first, the West Indies put a mighty total of 374 on the board thanks to an unbeaten 104 by Nicholas Pooran and half-centuries by openers Brandon King and Johnson Charles.

Things began somewhat bleakly for the Dutch, losing both openers in their 30s.

The Netherlands needed 205 from just 125 and four wickets down, but a sterling 111 from 76 balls by Teja Nidamanuru steered them on the path to victory.

However, the match would ultimately end deadlocked.

With a Super Over needed to decide the game, the Netherlands’ Logan van Beek smashed a record 30 runs from six balls (three fours, three sixes).

In reply, the West Indies could only muster eight runs.

The match was the highest-scoring draw in ODI history, with the Netherlands ultimately earning their place in the 2023 Cricket World Cup main tournament.

South Africa vs Australia: History Repeats Itself

10 years after their iconic 435/438 game, South Africa and Australia met in a five-match ODI series and the third game produced the fireworks many expected.

Australia began with a David Warner century and an Aaron Finch half-century.

With the Kingsmead crowd likely aware they were witnessing another classic, Steve Smith clubbed a run-a-ball 108 as the visitors ended on 371-6.

However, there was always the sense that Australia could have done more.

Either way, openers Quinton de Kock (70 from 49) and Hashim Amla (45 from 30) set the tone, but losing wickets in quick succession put the Proteas under the hammer.

David Miller then put in an iconic shift that elevated him to legendary status.

Despite pulling a groin muscle on only 26 runs and his team five wickets down and needing 155 runs more, he produced an unbeaten 118 runs from 79 balls to take his country over the line.

At the other end was an unlikely partner - Andile Phehlukwayo who scored 42 from 39.

After the match - the third-highest run chase in ODI history - Miller remarked: “It’s a special moment… It was a great wicket. I thought if we batted 50 overs, we’d get pretty close.”
