In a tournament like the Indian Premier League (IPL), the role of every player associated with the team becomes crucial. While the performances of the players are there for everyone to see not many know the efforts put in by the coaches, who are one of the main reasons behind the success of the cricket team in the big tournaments.
The effort put in by the coaches often goes unnoticed but they play a massive role in shaping the team and helping them reach new heights.
In the IPL, all the franchises have some big names in the coaching department who not only brought great laurels to the team but have ensured that the team remains in great spirits even when they are down and failing to win.

1. Mark Boucher - MI coach
Former South African wicket-keeper batter Mark Boucher is the head coach of the five-time champions Mumbai Indians. The Proteas cricketer was given the role in the IPL 2023 when the franchise promoted Mahela Jayawardena as global head of performance at the franchise. The former Sri Lanka skipper served as coach of the team from 2017 to 2022. Apart from him, Zaheer Khan, who was director of cricket operations, was also elevated to global head of cricket development. The ongoing IPL 2024 is the second edition for Boucher as a head coach. He has Kieron Pollard, the batting coach, and Lasith Malinga, the bowling coach, along with support staff.

2. Stephen Fleming - CSK coach
Stephen Fleming continues to be the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024. The former New Zealand cricketer has been head coach of the team since the inaugural edition of the league and has played a significant role in making the franchise joint-most successful in the league. Fleming arguably is one of the best coaches in the IPL. Chennai Super Kings also has Mike Hussey and Dwayne Bravo as batting and bowling coach respectively.

3. Chandrakant Pandit - KKR coach
Indian domestic veteran Chandrakant Pandit has been given the responsibility of coaching the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He was appointed as the head coach of the team last year but he couldn’t make an impact as the team finished in the bottom half of the table. However, the franchise owners backed him to continue. Apart from him, Kolkata Knight Riders has Gautam Gambhir as mentor, Abhishek Nayar as assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate as fielding coach and Bharat Arun as bowling coach.

4. Kumar Sangakkara - RR coach
Rajasthan Royals have one of the best cricketing minds as their head coach. Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara is serving the dual role for the team. Apart from being the head coach of the team, he is also acting as the Director of Cricket Operations. He has been managing the roles since 2022 and is doing a decent job for the team. Alongside him, Shane Bond is the bowling coach. He was roped in by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2024. The franchise doesn’t have a specialist batting coach.

5. Daniel Vettori - SRH coach
Ahead of the IPL 2024, Sunrisers Hyderabad had a massive change in the coaching set-up. Brian Lara was sacked as the head coach of the after a few dismal seasons in the league. The 2016 winners acquired the services of Daniel Vettori as the new head coach. The duo of Hemang Badani and Muttiah Muralitharan are part of the coaching setup as batting and bowling coaches respectively. They have also Dale Steyn as the fast bowling coach but the former Proteas bowler pulled out of the IPL 2024 due to personal reasons.

6. Andy Flower - RCB coach
One of the most successful coaches in world cricket Andy Flower is the head of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He was roped in ahead of the IPL 2024 when the franchise decided to part ways with Director of Cricket Mike Hesson, and head coach Sanjay Bangar. Flower has won some of the major titles across the world as a coach and would be keen to bring laurels to RCB, who are yet to win IPL. The Faf du Plessis-led side didn’t have a great start to the IPL 2024 and would be keen to turn things around.

7. Ashish Nehra - GT coach
Gujarat Titans’ coaching staff is one of the most talked about setups in the entire IPL. The 2022 winners have some big names in the ranks of the coaching staff and no doubt why they are one of the most successful units in the league. Ashish Nehra is the head coach of the team whereas 2011 World Cup winner Gary Kirsten is the batting coach and mentor of the team. Under their guidance, Gujarat Titans played two back-to-back finals, winning in 2022.

8. Justin Langer - LSG coach
Lucknow Super Giants were among the teams who had massive changes in the coaching setup ahead of the IPL 2024. They didn’t renew the contract of Andrew Flower, who served as head coach in 2022 and 2023. Also, Gautam Gambhir left the team as a mentor to join Kolkata Knight Riders. They also parted ways with Vijay Dahiya, who was their batting coach. They, however, replaced gold with platinum as they appointed Justin Langer as head coach, who is working with Sridharan Sriram, assistant coach, Jonty Rhodes as fielding coach, Pravin Tambe, spin bowling coach and Morne Morkel, fast bowling coach.

Delhi Capitals arguably has one of the best coaches in the Indian Premier League. Even though they parted ways, Ajit Agarkar and Shane Watson, still have some big names in the ranks. Australian great Ricky Ponting is the head coach of the team with Sourav Ganguly being Director of Cricket. Pravin Amre is the assistant coach. However, despite that they are yet to achieve success.

Punjab Kings are among the teams who are yet to win the IPL. Over the years they have roped in quite a few coaches but it hasn’t brought any success to them. In the 2023 edition of the league, they roped in Trevor Bayliss, who won the 2019 World Cup with England and also IPL with KKR twice. He would be hoping to change the fortunes of the team this year. Supporting him are Sanjay Bangar, who is the Director of Cricket Development, Brad Haddin, who is an assistant coach and Sunil Joshi, and Charl Langeveldt, who serve as spin, and fast-bowling coaches respectively.
