2024 IPL Season Highlights
The 17th edition of the IPL was different than other seasons due to the amount of runs belted in majority of the venues. The season was personified by the attacking approach of the batters with record-breaking scores piled up by teams such as Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Mumbai Indians among others.
The Kolkata-based franchise dominated the group stages, finishing at the top of the table, followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. While the Bengaluru side and Rajasthan failed to gleam in the knockouts, Hyderabad squared off against the Knight Riders, only to incur an embarrassing defeat in the grand finale. Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians finished as the wooden spoon as a captaincy transition didn’t go as planned for the five-time champions.
When zoomed into the individual numbers, Virat Kohli topped the batting charts with 741 runs at an average of 61.75 while Harshal Patel scalped 24 wickets, having bowled the majority of his overs in the slog-over phase. Kolkata Knight Riders’ Varun Chakaravarthy and Mumbai Indians’ Jasprit Bumrah were equally good with the ball, finishing second and third in the most wicket-takers list with 21 and 20 scalps respectively.
The season was unique in different ways as it saw 250-plus scores being piled up on seven occasions in a span of two months. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted 287/3 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the highest-ever total in an IPL innings. The same game witnessed the highest powerplay score of 125/0, courtesy of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma’s blitz. They touched the hundred-run mark in the fifth over, which was the highest by any team in IPL history.
