Irish Cricket Eyes Growth with New Stadium Funding as Paul Stirling Reflects on Future and South Africa Challenge
Irish cricket captain Paul Stirling discusses the impact of new stadium funding and the upcoming South Africa series as Ireland looks to rebuild after T20 World Cup setbacks.
Ireland have been in an unfortunate position where they have to play home games away from home, as they will be hosting the Proteas in a T20 and ODI series in the United Arab Emirates.
The Irish government announced in June they will be funding a new stadium and assisting with the development of cricket in the country. Senior captain Paul Stirling gave his thoughts on the series and funding by government.
Irish Government Intervention
"I think its massive from them to get facilities we can use solely for cricket. For that to happen, hopefully in the next couple of years will be huge. Particularly for those young cricketers coming through, that is the most important thing here if you are a young aspiring sportsperson in Ireland, you can play cricket and what want to play cricket. It will only help us grow,” Stirling told SportsBoom.com.
New Cycle in Ireland Cricket
Ireland Cricket is currently going through a new cycle, as Ireland National Selector Andrew White told BBC, "2026 and 2027 are pivotal years for our white-ball squads – those years being the next T20 and 50-over World Cups respectively".
"We sort of had a little bit of time off now since the last T20 games and I think it’s a good time to regroup and chat about how we can move forward and become a better side. Part of that will start Friday and again Sunday, see how we go against South Africa. There is an opportunity there if we play well, there is no reason not to get a win or two", said Stirling.
Afghanistan vs South Africa Review
Ireland's latest opponents South Africa played a T20 series against Afghanistan in the UAE. Where Afghanistan beat South Africa 2-1.
"I sort of followed it reasonably well, just to see what their [South Africa] squad make up was like. It seemed like it was the repeat of the same conditions where we played Afghanistan in Sharjah last year. It can be tricky in Sharjah with the way there is turn. I certainly think they will be giving new players chances, any player coming from South Africa are really good players."
T20 World Cup disappointment
The side comes off a disappointing campaign at the World Cup in June and will be looking to build towards the T20 World Cup in 2026
"We were in a really good place before the World Cup. We came off a couple decent wins against decent opposition and getting on the flight for the World Cup we were in a good place where we possibly can be in.”
“From my point of view, I would like to take us back to that sort of feeling again as soon as possible. At the time, players were in good form, and we were winning tight games and that was really good fun."
"I will admit, the World Cup was tough for a number of reasons, but we are pretty happy that one [World Cup] is past us now and we can move on.”
