The success of any bowler in cricket is measured by how many runs they conceded and how many wickets they claimed.

One of the greatest feats on the pitch is the five-wicket haul (5WI) - when a bowler dismisses five batsmen in the same innings.

Some iconic names in cricket have made a name for themselves by sending batter after batter back to their respective dugouts.

Cricket royalty like Australian legend Dennis Lillee and Sri Lankan icon Chaminda Vaas have made history with 5WIs in cricket.

SportsBoom looks at which bowlers have risen to the top by taking the most five-wicket hauls in Tests, ODIs and T20 internationals.

Muttiah Muralidaran

The Sri Lankan legend found unprecedented success in Tests and ODIs, thanks to his unique bowling action and almost uniquely wrist flexibility.

Blending wrist-spin and off-spin, Muttiah Muralidaran boasted an arsenal of variations including the deadly doosra that turned the opposite direction.

His ability to leave batsmen guessing led to a bowling average of above six wickets a game in Test matches and a 5WI rate of almost 50 percent.

Muralidaran also achieved a unique record, claiming 10 or more wickets in a single match against each of the other nine Test-playing nations.

In his final Test match, Muttiah Muralidaran dismissed India’s Pragyan Ojha to win the game for Sri Lanka and also achieve a remarkable milestone of 800 wickets in the longest format.

Ravichandran Ashwin

Perhaps one of India’s most prolific spin bowlers, Ravi Ashwin holds the distinction of taking the least amount of innings to reach 250, 300 and 350 Test wickets.

The right-arm off-break wizard, who retired in 2024, is also the quickest to reach 25 five-wicket hauls and also claimed the second-most wickets for his country.

Ashwin was adept at luring batsman in with a string of similar deliveries, only to mix up his style with changes to his direction to catch them entirely off-guard.

He was also no slouch in the batting department either, becoming one of only three international players to reach 3,000 runs and 500 wickets in Test matches.

Shane Warne

The iconic Australian spinner was perceived at times to be direct competition for Muralidaran, often trading records for the most wickets in Test cricket.

The late Shane Warne became the first bowler to reach 700 Test wickets, with Murali close behind and later retaking the lead in the so-called race.

The Aussie icon commented at one point that Muralidaran could reach 1,000 wickets, emphasising his deep respect for the Sri Lankan star.

Waqar Younis

Known for his ability to swing the ball at pace, Waqar Younis might not have been as accurate but his nickname of Toe Crusher sums up his wicket-taking skills.

The Pakistani legend was the youngest bowler to claim an ODI five-wicket haul - at just 18 years old - and is the record-holder for the most consecutive 5WIs.

Younis’ first ODI five-wicket haul was recorded in Pakistan’s victory over Sri Lanka in Sharjah on April 29, 1990, with legend Aravinda de Silva among his victims.

The former Pakistan right-armer also holds records for the best bowling figures by a captain in an ODI and the first captain to claim seven wickets in an innings.

What set the ‘Sultan of Swing’ apart was his ability to curve the ball through the air before hitting the pitch, with batsmen left struggling against his brutal yorkers.

Mitchell Starc

The Australian fast bowler has been missing for his country at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, raising concerns that he might be stepping away soon.

However, Mitchell Starc has already mentioned the need to recover from an ankle injury ahead of the 2025 World Test Championships final and international duties.

Either way, the lanky Aussie is already considered among the greats of his time, being fastest to reach 150 and 200 ODI wickets and his toughness under pressure.

Starc holds the all-time record for the most wickets in a single edition of the Men’s Cricket World Cup, reaping an impressive 27 scalps during the 2019 tournament.

Much of the Australian’s success is due to his long stride and upper body strength generating intense speed and his more classic foot placement at the crease.

Lesser-known Stars Impress in Cricket’s Shortest Format

Moazzam Baig, who captains the Malawian national team, racked up his trio of five-wicket hauls in T20Is against Swaziland in October 2021, Rwanda in December 2023, and Cameroon in September 2024.

His economy rate of just 4.77 after 39 T20 internationals is equally impressive.

Baig, who is of Pakistani origin, is one of only two men to have claimed three 5WIs in the shortest format, with the other being Bahrain’s Rizwan Butt.

By comparison the Bahraini medium-pacer has an economy touching 7.

Butt earned his triple set of five-wicket hauls against Singapore in December 2022, Tanzania in March 2024 and Cambodia in November 2024.

Many other players have claimed two 5WIs in T20 internationals.

However, Zaker Taqawi took the least amount of matches to achieve this feat, claiming five wickets against Croatia in only his 16th 20-over game.

Next on the list is a player who is much more well-known.

Varun Chakravarthy of India

Indian leg-break bowler Varun Chakravarthy claimed two five-wicket hauls in only 18 games, notably coming against powerhouses South Africa and England.

The spinner was recently added to his country’s Champions Trophy squad.

In August 2024 against Croatia and Finland respectively, Charlie Rumistrzewicz of Spain claimed the next-fastest 5WI in only 26 matches.

The left-arm spinner is the youngest of the top five at 19 years old.

Mary Duggan

The English all-rounder holds a vaunted place in the sport, with her 77 Test wickets still standing as the all-time record in women’s cricket.

Her figures of 7/6 in a five-day match against Australia in 1958 have only been surpassed twice, underscoring her abilities with the ball.

For six years from 1957, Mary Duggan captained the England women’s team and even claimed a century in her final international game.

In addition, she was one of two women awarded an advanced coaching certification by the esteemed Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Up until her passing in March 1973, Duggan was president of the Women's Cricket Association, overseeing women’s cricket in England.

Shubhangi Kulkarni

Shubhangi Kulkarni showed her class as a leg-spinner from her first international match, claiming a five-wicket haul on debut.

Besides her impressive figures as a player and captain, the Indian star also found tremendous success as a cricket administrator.

Kulkarni served as secretary of the Women’s Cricket Association of India and is a member of the ICC Women’s Cricket Council.

Betty Wilson was the first woman to claim a five-wicket haul, recording figures of 6/28 on debut for Australia against New Zealand.

She would also score a century against England in her second Test match, becoming the first female player to achieve this feat.

Wilson also holds the distinction of being the first cricketer overall to score a century and claim 10 wickets in the longest format.

The right-arm off-spinner, who retired in 2024 after years of service to her national side, bowed out as a veteran of women’s cricket with the pedigree to match.

Anisa Mohammed is fifth on the list of all-time dismissals in women’s ODIs with 151 and was also the first player, male or female, to reach 100 T20I wickets.

The Trinidadian also has a combined seven five-wicket hauls in ODIs (5) and T20Is (2) and is the only player to have done so - a testament to her abilities.

Sune Luus

Sune Luus has become a mainstay of her national side, featuring in their second-place finish at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

The former South African captain holds a number of records, including becoming the second player to reach a half-century and a 5WI in one WODI match.

Luus is also among the few players to reach 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in 50-over cricket and is tied with Anisa Mohammed for wickets in a calendar year (37).

Women’s T20 Cricket Minnows Leading the Way

Captain of the Hong Kong women’s cricket team, Kary Chan claimed her first five-wicket haul during the 2019 Women’s Twenty20 East Asia Cup.

She is tied with West Indies legend Anisa Mohammed on three 5WIs but could possibly claim the outright lead, as the Trinidadian is now retired.

Multiple players are tied on two five-wicket hauls apiece but Joanne Hicks of the Isle of Man has claimed this feat in the least amount of games (20).

By comparison, Ada Bhasin of Singapore took 36 games to achieve the same, while PNG veteran Kaia Arua reached two 5WIs in 47 matches.

Five-wicket Hauls in the Context of All Cricket Formats

The ability to take wickets - and take multiple wickets - remains a hallmark of excellence in bowling no matter the format or gender divisions.

In Test cricket, where patience is prized, perhaps the simplest way to prevent runs on the board is to ensure a steady flow of opposition wickets.

Rapid wicket-taking can slow run rates significantly in ODI cricket, leading to additional pressure on teams in the latter stages of the 50-over format.

While T20 cricket is geared towards fast run-scoring, the ability to interrupt a team’s momentum can make the difference for the team batting second.

At its core, despite the changes and updates, cricket remains a game about batting, bowling and fielding, with wickets still a precious commodity.
