In the fast-paced arena of T20 cricket, batsmen are under pressure to maximise the amount of runs from each ball they face.

In the Indian Premier League, which is among the most popular 20-over leagues, international stars headline their various teams.

As such, some of the biggest names in the cricketing world have imposed their will on the opposition's bowling attack with massive tallies.

SportsBoom has looked at the most expensive overs in IPL history and ranks the elite cricketers who made it rain fours and sixes.

Record for the Most Runs in an IPL Over

For franchises in the IPL, batsmen who can contribute big scores over-by-over are prized for their contributions and for putting the opposition bowlers under pressure.

Some notable international players have done extensive damage in the space of six balls, with teams taking advantage of this foundation going on to record solid totals.

Chris Gayle: 37

For 10 years, Chris Gayle’s mighty display of power hitting and held record for the fastest century in the IPL stood alone in the annals of IPL history when Royal Challengers Bengaluru met Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the 2011 edition. The West Indies icon smashed three 4s and four 6s off an unfortunate Prasanth Parameswaran, with one 6 struck from a no-ball.

With Tuskers Kerala setting a low total of 125, Gayle’s contribution of 44 from just 16 balls helped RCB reach the target in the 13th over. Royal Challengers would go on to make the IPL playoffs and win the 2011 title that year.

In addition to his joint record for the most runs in a single IPL over, Chris Gayle once scored an unbeaten 175, with his career statistics including six centuries and 31 half-centuries.

Ravindra Jadeja: 37

Jadeja is considered one of the greatest all-rounders in IPL. During the 2011 edition of the Indian Premier League, Ravindra Jadeja flexed his batting muscle and matched Gayle’s record. The Chennai Super Kings veteran dispatched RCB’s Harshal Patel for four 6s and two 4s, including a no-ball delivery slapped to the boundary rope. Jadeja was the Man of the Match with his unbeaten 62.

Thanks to the all-rounder’s contribution in Match 19, CSK set an imposing total of 191 and restricted Royal Challengers to only 122 runs. Chennai Super Kings kept that momentum rolling to claim the 2021 IPL trophy.

Pat Cummins: 35

Australian all-rounder Pat Cummins, while still playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, made Mumbai Indians’ Daniel Sims the victim in the 2022 edition of the IPL. Four 6s, two 4s and two runs from a no-ball resulted in a costly over of 35 runs. Cummins earned the Player of the Match laurel for his unbeaten 56 from just 15 balls.

Mumbai Indians, one of the most popular teams in the league, set a low total of 161, but KKR lost quick wickets to make their task much harder. Cummins helped stabilise the innings and secure the win, although Knight Riders lost their way and ultimately ended seventh on the points table that year.

Suresh Raina: 33

Suresh Raina put on a veteran display for CSK when they met Kings XI Punjab in Qualifier 2, during the 2014 edition of the IPL. Facing Parvinder Awana, the seasoned batsman hit two 6s and five 4s, including a boundary from a no-ball, wrapping up an impressive over of 33 runs. Raina was eventually run out for 87 runs from 25 balls.

While his contribution was a focal point of the CSK run chase, a lack of supporting roles saw Kings XI restrict the perennial contenders to 24 runs short. Chennai ended the season third on the points table, with KXIP losing in the final to Kolkata Knight Riders.

Chris Gayle, Majoj Tiwary: 33

Punjab Kings’ Ravi Bopara witnessed the fearsome abilities of Chris Gayle first-hand in the 2010 season of the IPL. While representing KKR, the West Indies big man smashed four 6s before some terrible judgment saw 7 added in wides. Manoj Tiwary faced the first ball of that over and took the best option - a single to get Gayle on strike.

Curiously, the Knight Riders went on to lose the match. Their misfortunes continued after a loss to Mumbai Indians in the final group-stage game saw Royal Challengers Bengaluru claim the playoff spot instead. KKR ended the season in sixth place.

Honourable Mentions

One of the most recent additions to the list was Romario Shepherd’s 32 runs off the bowling of Anrich Nortje as the Mumbai Indians faced the Delhi Capitals in the 2024 edition. MI became the first team to reach 150 IPL wins, but that was where the positives ended. Mumbai finished the season at the bottom of the standings, with only four wins from 14 games in one of their worst outings in tournament history.

Conclusion

It is clear that the record-setting scores of stars like Chris Gayle and Ravindra Jadeja went a long way to helping their teams claim victory and reap success later in the Indian Premier League.

However, it is also evident that some of these batting performances were flashes in the pan for their franchises, who failed to capitalise on impressive play-making and ended up with nothing to show for it.

Can you recall witnessing any of the massive Indian Premier League overs listed in our ranking, and which of these do you consider the most memorable? Which batsman would you call the most destructive?
