Nepal - 26 sixes
The record for the most sixes by a team in a T20 international innings is held by Nepal. Against Mongolia at the 2023 Asian Games, Nepal set a record for the highest-ever T20 score of 314-3, during which they hit 26 sixes, the most by any team in a T20 international match.
Kushal Malla scored an unbeaten 137 off just 50 balls with the help of eight boundaries and 12 maximums. Captain Rohit Paudel, who scored a 21-ball 67, hit six sixes, while Dipendra Singh Airee sent the ball over the boundary rope eight times during his 10-ball 52. Nepal went on to win the match by a huge margin of 273 runs.
Japan - 23 sixes
Next on the list is Japan with 23 sixes against China in February 2024. Openers Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake and Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming forged an unbeaten first-wicket partnership of 258 runs. Lake finished on 134 off 68 laced with 12 sixes. Captain Fleming, on the other hand, scored 109 off 53 with the help of 11 sixes. Both the batsmen went all guns blazing to set up a big total for Japan, which they defended comfortably
Afghanistan - 22 sixes
Against Ireland in February 2019 in Dehradun, Afghanistan batted first and put up a total of 273 for 8, during which they collectively hit a total of 22 sixes. Hazratullah Zazai delivered a sensational performance, scoring an unbeaten 162 off only 62 balls at a strike rate of 261.29. This included a total of 16 sixes. Zazai and Usman Ghani (73 off 48) shared 236 runs for the first wicket. Ireland, in reply, fell short of the target by 84 runs.
West Indies - 22 sixes
The West Indies put up 258 for 5 against South Africa at the Centurion in March 2023. During their innings, the visitors hit a total of 22 sixes, 11 of which came from the bat of Johnson Charles. Charles scored 118 off just 46 balls at a strike rate of 256.52. Kyle Mayers also scored a century. However, this effort came in a losing cause as South Africa chased down the target in 18.5 overs after Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks stitched together a first-wicket partnership of 152 runs.
West Indies - 21 sixes
Known for their flamboyant and fearless batting, the West Indies find themselves on the list again. Against India in Lauderhill in August 2017, the Carlos Brathwaite-led side posted a total of 245 for 6 in their 20 overs. Openers Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis were at their best, sharing a partnership of 126 runs for the first wicket. Charles scored a 33-ball 79 with the help of seven sixes while Lewis reached a century off 49 deliveries. His knock was laced with nine sixes. The match eventually went down to the wire before the West Indies won it by one run.
India - 21 sixes
India defeated Sri Lanka by 88 runs in December 2017. Batting first, the Rohit Sharma-led team amassed a total of 260 for 5 after the captain and his opening partner KL Rahul scored 165 runs for the first wicket. Sharma top scored with 118 off 43 including 10 sixes, while KL's contribution was a 49-ball 89 that was laced with eight sixes. In total, India hit 21 sixes in their innings. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 172 runs in 17.2 overs.
Austria - 21 sixes
In a match between Austria and Luxembourg in August 2019, Austria hit a total of 21 sixes during their first innings total of 239 for 3. Captain Razmal Shigiwal and Mirza Ahsan scored half centuries to propel Austria to the big total. Both these batsmen hit seven sixes each. In reply, Luxembourg managed just 104, losing the match by 135 runs.
Scotland - 20 sixes
In September 2019, Scotland faced the Netherlands in a T20I match in Dublin. Batting first, Scotland posted a total of 252 for 3, during which they hit a total of 20 sixes. Openers George Munsey and captain Kyle Coetzer scored the bulk of the runs, sharing 200 runs for the first wicket. Munsey remained unbeaten on 127 off just 56 balls with the help of 14 sixes. Coetzer, on the other hand, hit five sixes during his 50-ball 89. The bowlers then defended the target and Scotland won the match by 58 runs.
England - 20 sixes
England defeated South Africa comprehensively when the two teams met for a T20I match in Bristol in July 2022. Half-centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Jason Roy propelled England to a first innings total of 234 for 6, during which they hit a total of 20 sixes. 14 of these sixes came from Bairstow and Ali. South Africa, in their chase, lost wickets at regular interviews, eventually losing the match by a big margin.
Estonia - 20 sixes
More recently, in June 2017, Estonia chased down a target of 192 runs against Cyprus in Episkopi. Sahil Chauhan played a blinder of an innings, remaining unbeaten on 144 off just 41 balls with the help of 18 sixes and six boundaries. Thanks to this knock, Estonia wrapped up the chase in only 13 overs.
Chris Gayle holds the record for most sixes in T20 cricket history. The flamboyant batsman has hit a total of 1056 sixes in 455 innings.
Rohit Sharma holds the record for the most sixes in T20 international cricket. From 2007 until his retirement from the format in 2024, the ‘hitman’ hit a total of 205 sixes.
