The Pakistan Super League (PSL) comprises six teams, including Lahore Qalandars, representing Lahore city. Lahore Qalandars struggled in their initial attempts, finishing at the bottom of the points table in the first four seasons. However, their fortunes turned in the 2020 edition when they reached their first final. Subsequently, in the 2022 PSL edition, Lahore Qalandars not only made another final appearance but also emerged as champions, marking a significant turnaround in their performance. In 2023, with a second PSL title, they became the first team in the competition to defend the title. The 2024 PSL starts on 17th February 2024.
Who is the owner of Lahore Qalandars?
In December 2015, the PCB disclosed the owners of five franchises that would take part in the PSL. The Lahore franchise was acquired by Qatar Lubricants Company (QALCO) for a sum of US$25 million, securing ten years for their ownership. This sale positioned Lahore as the second-most expensive team in the PSL, following the Karachi Kings, which was sold for US$26 million. In 2018, with the addition of a sixth team sold for approximately US$41.6 million, Lahore Qalandars became the third most expensive franchise in the league.
Fawad Rana, who is the owner of Lahore Qalandars, purchased the franchise on behalf of QALCO, a Qatar-based lubricants company. The "Q" in the Qalandars represents both Qatar and QALCO. He also owns the Durban Qalandars team in the Zimbabwe Afro T10 tournament.
Initially involved in theatre as an actor, Rana transitioned to a business career in Qatar, where he has since resided. Over time, he has evolved into a highly successful businessman. Meanwhile, Fawad’s brothers, Atif and Sameen, are also involved in the team’s management. Atif Rana holds the position of CEO at Lahore Qalandars, while Sameen Rana serves as the COO and Manager.
In February 2022, Al-Jalil Developers, a prominent player in the real estate sector, secured the co-ownership of Qalandars.
Lahore Qalandars captains
Azhar Ali was the first captain of the Qalandars in 2016. During that season, DJ Bravo took charge of a match when Ali was sidelined due to injury. The following year, in 2017, Brendon McCullum took over as captain, maintaining the role until 2019. In 2019, the team saw three different captains - Mohammed Hafeez, AB de Villiers, and Fakhar Zaman. Sohail Akhtar took on the captaincy in 2020 and retained the position until 2022 when Shaheen Afridi assumed leadership. Afridi steered the Qalandars to their maiden title in 2022, and a second title win in 2023.
