    What is a hat-trick in Cricket?

    A hat-trick in cricket is a special achievement for any bowler. Hat-trick occurs when a bowler takes three wickets in consecutive deliveries in his spell. The hat-trick can be achieved across two overs too. If a bowler gets a wicket on the fifth, sixth and first ball of the two overs or on the sixth, first and second ball it is regarded as a hat-trick.

    Hat-tricks in PSL (2016-2025)

    The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is one of the leading franchise-based T20 cricket leagues. With the best players from all over the world featuring in the tournament, it produces an exciting brand of cricket for the fans and spectators. Despite being played at the flat decks in Pakistan and UAE, there are some moments won by the bowlers. As many as 5 hat tricks in PSL are recorded across seasons. Here we will take a look at the list of PSL hat tricks and find out who was the first player to take a hat trick in the PSL.

    Amir hat trick in PSL season one was the first hat trick in PSL. Featuring for Karachi Kings in the team’s first-ever fixture in PSL, Amir dismissed Dwayne Bravo by uprooting his middle stump. Zohaib Khan was caught behind by wicketkeeper Saifuallah Bangash and then Kevon Cooper was out leg before wicket to set-up the PSL first hat trick. Amir achieved this feat in the 19th over taking the wickets in 18.2, 18.3 and 18.4 balls to register himself as the first player to take a hat trick in PSL. He finished his 4-over spell with figures of 3/27 and helped restrict Lahore Qalandars to 125 for 8 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on February 5, 2016. Karachi Kings chased down the total in the 16th over with Lendl Simmons (62*) and player of the match Shakib Al Hasan (51) playing pivotal roles with the bat in the 7-wicket win.

    Left arm seamer Junaid Khan registered his name in the list of hat tricks in PSL during the third season of the tournament. Featuring for Multan Sultans, it was Lahore Qalandars again which suffered the fate. Batting first after losing the toss, Sultans scored 179 for 5 in 20 overs with Kumar Sangakkara scoring 63, his 2nd consecutive fifty and captain Shoaib Malik 48. In response, the Lahore Qalandars middle order derailed with Junaid Khan taking a hat trick in PSL with the wickets of Yasir Shah, Cameron Delport and Raza Hasan in the 17th over. Yasir was caught behind by Sangakkara, Delport received a full toss on the very next ball which he hit straight to Ahmed Shehzad at deep midwicket and Raza was caught at midwicket in the circle giving Junaid the hat trick in PSL. Qalandars were bundled for 136 in 17.2 overs, Junaid finishing with figures of 3 for 24 in 3 overs.

    Multan Sultans found another hat-trick hero a mere 8 days after Junaid Khan’s heroics. Imran Tahir, who was born in Punjab but played international cricket for South Africa wreaked havoc against Quetta Gladiators at Sharjah. Multan Sultans won the toss and bowled first with left-arm seamer Sohail Tanvir taking 3/14 in 3 overs to derail the lineup. In the 16th over, Tahir’s 3rd of the match he bowled Hassan Khan on the 2nd ball, John Hastings had the same fate on the first ball he faced and then on the very next ball Rahat Ali was trapped LBW and Gladiators were bowled out for 102. Tahir became the third bowler to take a hat trick in PSL. Kumar Sangakkara scored another half century helping the side to a nine-wicket win.

    The veteran right-arm fast bowler became the fourth player in the list of hat tricks in PSL. At the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in 2019, Peshawar Zalmi won the toss and opted to bowl against Islamabad United who scored 158/9. Chasing a fairly easy total on a small ground such as Sharjah, the Zalmi batting order collapsed with only Kieron Pollard showing some resistance with 51. Mohammad Sami bowled a tight spell conceding just 22 runs in 3.4 overs and picked up a hat trick in the final over of the innings. Wahab Riaz departed after scoring 20 off just 8 balls. It was a low full toss from Sami but Sahibzada Farhan’s acrobatic effort in the covers helped him get his first scalp. Umaid Asif was caught by Faheem Ashraf at long off on the very next delivery and the hat-trick was completed with the dismissal of Hasan Ali caught by Farhan in the covers. Zalmi were dismissed for 146 losing the close shave by 12 runs. Sami was awarded the player of the match.

    The 21-year-old right-arm pacer became the third bowler from Multan Sultans to take a hat-trick in PSL. Overall, he is the fifth bowler to take a PSL hat-trick. It was a high-scoring encounter at Rawalpindi where Sultans batted first and scored 262 for 3 with Usman Khan hitting 120 and Mohammad Rizwan scoring 55. For Quetta Gladiators, Omair Yousuf (67) and Iftikhar Ahmed (53) scored fifties taking the team closer to the target. Bowling the 17th over, Afridi dismissed Mohammad Nawaz miscuing a hit down to long off where Kieron Pollard took the catch in his bucket hands. Umaid Asif departed the next ball hitting Pollard again. The 2 deliveries had Abbas on a hat-trick at the beginning of his next over. He returned to bowl the 19th and got rid of the dangerous Umar Akmal who hit one straight to Tim David at long off. Afridi was awarded the player of the match for his match-winning 5 for 47 which included his first hat trick in PSL.

    What is a double hat-trick in Cricket?

    A double hat-trick is when a bowler takes four wickets off four consecutive deliveries. A total of 152 hat-tricks have been registered in international cricket so far with 46 hat-tricks in Test cricket, 50 hat-tricks in one-day internationals and 56 hat-tricks in T20 internationals.

    Which bowlers have taken multiple hat-tricks?

    Australian bowler Fred Spofforth became the first bowler in the world to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. England’s Stuart Broad and Pakistan’s Wasim Akram are the only 2 bowlers to achieve 2 hat-tricks in Test cricket.

    In one-day internationals, Pakistan’s Jalal-ud-Din achieved the first ever hat-trick with Sri Lankan pace bowler Lasith Malinga the only man to achieve the feat thrice in the format. Australian speedster Brett Lee achieved a hat-trick against Bangladesh in 2007 during the T20 World Cup, the first hat-trick in the format. Malinga, Serbia’s Mark Pavlovic, New Zealand’s Tim Southee and Malta’s Waseem Abbas are the only bowlers to have taken 2 hat-tricks in T20 internationals.
