Pakistan vs India at Champions Trophy: Match-by-Match Breakdown
2004
Meeting for their first Champions showdown in Edgbaston in Birmingham on September 19, 2004, Pakistan won the toss and elected to field first.
India were bowled out with one ball to spare, setting a total of 200 thanks to a top score by Rahul Dravid of 67, with Pakistan’s Irfan Pathan claiming figures of 3/34.
In reply, eventual Man of the Match Mohammed Yousuf starred with an unbeaten 81, as Pakistan claimed a three-wicket victory with just four balls to spare.
The victory saw Pakistan advance to the semi-finals, where they were knocked out by the West Indies, while India was knocked out in the group stages.
2009
Five years later, the group stage saw another mouthwatering clash as Pakistan and India met on September 26, 2009, at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Pakistan won the toss again and this time elected to bat first.
Thanks to a Man of the Match run-a-ball innings of 128 by Shoaik Malik, Pakistan applied scoreboard pressure with a total of 302/9 in their 50 overs.
Rahul Dravid was once again the mainstay for India, although his 76-run contribution could not prevent his side from being bowled out for 248 in a 54-run loss.
With two wins in the group stage, Pakistan went on to meet eventual champions New Zealand in the semi-final, while India once again dropped out in the first round.
2013
The tables turned four years later, with India topping the table and Pakistan already eliminated before their match on June 15, 2013, at Edgbaston.
Rain reduced the game to 40 overs a side, with India electing to field and bowling Pakistan out for just 165 with a couple of balls to spare.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowling attack with 2/19.
With India’s innings reduced to only 20 overs as rain continued to wreak havoc, Shikhar Dhawan top-scored with 48 from 41 as his side reached the revised total with five balls remaining.
Shikhar Dhawan went on to score the most runs overall in the 2013 Champions Trophy (363) as India beat England in the final to claim their second title.
2017
India levelled their head-to-head record against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy on June 4, 2017, during the next edition in England and Wales.
Rohit Sharma led from the front with his 91 as India set a mammoth 319/3, while Wahab Riaz set the worst bowling figures in tournament history with 0/87.
With the game reduced to 48 overs a side initially and then again to 41 overs a side due to rain, Pakistan ended their innings on 164/9, with Azhar Ali reaching his half-century.
Two weeks later, the rivals and neighbours met in the final at The Oval in London, in a highly-anticipated clash that set a number of records.
India won the toss and elected to field first, with Pakistan setting their highest total in any ICC tournament final of 338/4, with Fakhar Zaman top-scoring with 114.
In reply, a 76-run cameo by Hardik Pandya was not nearly enough as India fell to 158 with only 30 overs bowled to set the largest margin of victory in runs for any ICC ODI competition.

Significance of India-Pakistan Rivalry in Champions Trophy
The intensity of Pakistan and India’s rivalry has transcended the ICC Champions Trophy, setting the stage for many memorable clashes in the tournament.
This year, a loss for Pakistan or India in their group-stage clash could leave them under intense pressure, with a place in the semi-finals on the line.
Historically, both nations have something to prove, with India team having a better record in ICC tournaments but Pakistan having the better record in head-to-head ODI clashes.
Fans will be anticipating another titanic battle with the bat and the ball that could determine the outcome of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Final thoughts on India vs Pakistan at Champions Trophy
With Pakistan holding a superior head-to-head record against India in the ICC Champions Trophy, the hosts could hold firm to their belief heading into the 2025 edition.
India, meanwhile, could even the score at the tournament and also deny their neighbours a place in the semi-final; a factor that could be a source of motivation for the side.
Expect the Dubai International Stadium to be a staging ground for one of these sides to propel themselves into the later stages of the Champions Trophy this year.
