Proteas Look to Build Momentum as ODI Series Against Pakistan Begins
The Proteas are transitioning from a T20I series win to a three-match ODI series vs Pakistan. ODI captain Temba Bavuma is confident in his team's winning streak, focusing on maintaining momentum, evaluating new talents, and building a winning culture. Aiden Markram will lead the team in Bavuma's absence, despite struggling with form. The team aims to start strong and continue their dominance in the series.
The Proteas are set to transition from their impressive 2-0 T20I series victory to a three-match ODI series against Pakistan, starting tomorrow. With a blend of returning Test players and white-ball specialists, ODI captain Temba Bavuma is confident his team can maintain their winning streak.
Building on Momentum
After the T20 series triumph, Bavuma emphasized the importance of carrying forward the positive energy into the ODIs.
“It has been a good start to the series. Good cricket was played by the T20 boys. There’s momentum and confidence from that, and we want to feed off it,” he told SportsBoom.com.
Team for the 1st ODI
While some players from the Test series against Sri Lanka are set to return, Bavuma confirmed he would miss the first game for load management purposes.
“It’s the strongest side we can put together against Pakistan, bar one or two players due to injuries. I won’t be involved tomorrow—it’s about managing my workload.”
Aiden Markram will step in as captain for the match. However, Bavuma noted that the final XI was yet to be determined, as some players like David Miller were undergoing fitness tests.
“I’d love to tell you the team, but we don’t know at this point,” Bavuma admitted with a laugh.
Key Objectives for the Series
Bavuma outlined the team’s main goals for the ODI series, focusing on establishing a winning culture and evaluating new talent.
“It’s very important we start with a win tomorrow. We haven’t played as an ODI outfit in a while, so it’s key to build momentum and a winning mindset,” he said.
“There are players who will be getting opportunities, and we want to see what they can offer. But above all, we want to be successful and win.”
Markram to Lead Despite Dip in Form
Markram, who has been struggling with consistency in ODIs, will captain the side in Bavuma’s absence. His recent run includes just one score above 40 (68*) in his last 10 ODI innings. Bavuma, however, backed Markram to find his form and lead effectively.
“Aiden is a player we believe in and trust a lot. The form he’s under is normal—we’ve all been there,” Bavuma said.
“The advice I’d give him is to keep his head down and work hard. As a team, we believe in him. Things will turn for him at any moment.”
Looking Ahead
The Proteas will aim for a strong start in the ODI series to continue their dominance against Pakistan. With new players looking to seize their opportunities and senior players returning, the team will focus on building depth and consistency as they work toward a winning culture in white-ball cricket.
