Exclusive: Joe Root Ready to Put T20 Cricket at the Forefront with Paarl Royals

England's cricketing maestro, Joe Root, has joined the Paarl Royals for his maiden SA20 season, adding his wealth of experience and skill to the South African franchise.

Why SA20?

Root, a cornerstone of England's red-ball setup and a nominee for ICC Test Player of the Year, explained his decision to embrace the T20 format and play in South Africa.

"I’ve watched SA20 over the last few years, and it’s an outstanding tournament. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play T20 cricket here and eager to perform well for the Paarl Royals."

Root admitted that England's packed Test schedule, combined with his stint as captain, often sidelined his T20 ambitions.
 

"I’ve had a lot of Test commitments, and T20 cricket has taken a backseat for me. While I’ve had glimpses of it in The Hundred and the IPL, I’ve been craving more opportunities in this format. It’s fantastic to be here and to enjoy South Africa and the warm welcome from the Royals."

A Renewed Focus on T20 Cricket

Despite being synonymous with Test cricket, Root’s passion for T20 cricket remains undiminished.

"I love the format; it’s thrilling and fast-paced. It’s great to have this block of time to immerse myself in T20 again. Playing in the IPL, even without much game time, was invaluable, and it’s reignited my hunger for this style of cricket."

The SA20 provides Root with a platform to showcase his adaptability and further hone his skills in the shortest format.

Reunion with David Miller

Root’s partnership with Paarl Royals captain David Miller is a highlight of the season. The duo shares a history from their days together at Yorkshire in 2012. Root fondly recalled their camaraderie.

"David and I go way back. We had a great time when he played at Yorkshire, and it’s been fantastic to see his journey since then. He’s achieved so much for South Africa and in domestic cricket. It’s brilliant to play alongside him again and see how he leads the team."

He also commended Miller’s leadership and influence on the squad.

"David’s presence, both on and off the field, creates a fantastic atmosphere. He’s an inspirational leader and has made my time here even more enjoyable."

Root's Ambitions for the Season

Root is eager to make his mark for the Paarl Royals.

"I’m here to contribute and put in good performances for the team. The SA20 is an incredible tournament, and I feel lucky to be a part of it. I’m focused on giving my best and helping the Royals succeed."
