At just 18 years old, Kwena Maphaka has already made waves in the cricketing world.

Fresh off completing his matriculation, the young Proteas star is gearing up to showcase his talent in the SA20, joining the Paarl Royals. With international and IPL experience already under his belt, Maphaka is poised to become one of the most exciting prospects in South African cricket.

A Breakthrough Summer

The 2024/25 cricket season has been nothing short of extraordinary for Maphaka, who debuted in all three international formats within months. His performances allowed him to grow and display his skills on the grandest stages, with the support of coaches fostering his natural talent.

"It’s been a really special summer for me. It’s crazy how quickly things have moved and how much my life has changed. But I’m keeping my feet on the ground, striving to learn and achieve success," he shared.

South Africa’s Youngest Test Player

Maphaka etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest player to represent South Africa in Test cricket, breaking a record previously held by Paul Adams. The connection between the two players runs deep, with Adams coaching Maphaka at the U19 level.

"It feels incredible. Paul Adams, who coached me, sent me a heartfelt message congratulating me. I know how much that record meant to him, and now it means the world to me. I’ll cherish it forever."

Handling Critics with Maturity

Despite his rapid rise, Maphaka has faced criticism, but he remains grounded by focusing on the opinions that matter most.

"I have my family, my team, and myself. That’s all that truly matters when it comes to my cricket. People are entitled to their opinions, but only a few voices influence the way I play the game."

Mentorship Under Kagiso Rabada

Sharing a close bond with Kagiso Rabada, one of the best bowlers in the world, has been invaluable for Maphaka’s growth. Rabada has taken the youngster under his wing, offering guidance and support.

"KG is like an older brother and mentor to me. We’ve worked closely together, and it’s great to see our relationship and careers grow. Hopefully, we’ll share the new ball in the future, maybe sooner than expected."

Empowered by Coaching Support

Maphaka attributes much of his confidence to the encouragement he’s received from his national and Paarl Royals coaches. Their belief in his abilities has given him the freedom to perform without the weight of unnecessary pressure.

"My coaches have always said, ‘We know what you can do, just go out there and do your best.’ That freedom to express myself and be myself has been so important for my development. It’s how you get the best out of a player."
