Afghanistan’s new batting prodigy Sediqullah Atal’s life is changing rapidly.

Since the ACC Emerging Asia Cup in October 2024, where he became the Player of the Tournament by scoring 368 runs for the Afghanistan A team in five matches at an impressive batting average of 122.66 and a strike rate of 145, Atal has become the talk of the town in Kabul.

ATAL NOT LOSING SLEEP OVER SELECTION

The left-handed batsman appears to be breathing down the neck of Afghanistan’s established opening pair, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz, as he pushes for a regular spot in the playing XI. His maiden ODI hundred against Zimbabwe has certainly strengthened his case.

Atal’s ability to score runs under pressure has earned him recognition as a reliable and dynamic player. Many cricket pundits believe he is on the verge of becoming a permanent fixture in Afghanistan’s batting lineup.

However, Atal remains unfazed and prefers to leave the selection process to destiny, focusing instead on scoring runs.

“Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are outstanding openers for our national team, consistently delivering remarkable performances over the years,” Atal told SportBoom.com.

“I don’t think much about selection. I prioritize making the most of every opportunity I get. Securing a spot on the team is the selectors’ job, but I believe consistent performances will lead to more chances for me,” he said.

Atal’s calm demeanor off the field is reflected in his batting style, which combines composure with aggressive intent. His ability to switch gears depending on the match situation has caught the attention of fans and cricket analysts alike.

Andrew Puttick, Afghanistan's batting coach, shared his thoughts with this website, emphasizing the value of competition for top-order spots and praising Atal's temperament.

“It’s good to get some younger players involved in the squad and give them exposure. They’re talented players with their own strengths and areas to work on. Sediq has done really well, particularly against Bangladesh. He looked comfortable, calm, and composed, and he’s got a good head on his shoulders. He works hard, and I think he’ll become a fine player,” said Puttick.

“We’re expecting Ibrahim to return in a month or two, and we’re building a competitive environment at the top of the order with four or five guys in contention. This puts a bit of pressure on Ibrahim and Gurbaz, which is great for the team. The Afghan players work really hard, they’re clean strikers of the ball, and they’re improving all the time, which is fantastic to see,” he added.

EYEING TO ADAPT WITH SENIORS IN THE DRESSING ROOM

Adapting to the senior team’s dressing room is an exciting but challenging journey for Atal. Having transitioned from age-level cricket to the national team, he is keenly aware of the differences between the two levels of the game.

“There is a significant difference between age-level cricket and senior or national-level cricket. In U-19 or emerging-level cricket, players often lack experience and carry self-doubt,” he said.

“However, being part of the national team brings a sense of relaxation and confidence. It’s reassuring to know that I’ve reached a higher level where I can play well and gain valuable experience both on and off the field,” he added.

Reflecting on his journey, Atal shared, “My cricket journey began in school, where I joined the school team and played until I graduated. After graduation, I enrolled in an academy to hone my professional skills. I first competed at the regional U-19 level, and in 2018, I was fortunate to be selected for the U-19 national team, marking the start of my professional career representing Afghanistan.”

Atal’s disciplined approach to the game has been shaped by his early struggles and the lessons he learned along the way.

Coming from a country where cricket is not just a sport but a symbol of hope and unity, Atal feels a deep sense of responsibility every time he steps onto the field.

“My goal is to work diligently to contribute to my country and maintain a positive mindset. I believe in my potential to achieve greater things in cricket for Afghanistan,” he concluded.

With Afghanistan’s cricket team growing stronger each year, players like Atal are crucial to building depth and resilience. His rise reflects the success of Afghanistan’s developmental programs, which have consistently unearthed talent capable of competing on the global stage.

As Atal prepares for the challenges ahead, his focus remains on steady improvement and adapting to the demands of international cricket.

Whether it’s mastering new techniques, handling pressure, or building camaraderie with teammates, the young batsman is determined to make his mark.
