In the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Brett Lee became the first bowler to take a hattrick in the tournament. In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Pat Cummins took two hattricks in consecutive games.

The T20 World Cup has seen some extraordinary bowling performances over the years, with hat-tricks being among the most thrilling and memorable moments. In the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, Brett Lee became the first bowler to take a hattrick in the tournament. The on-going T20 World Cup 2024 has already witnessed three hattricks, two of which were taken in consecutive matches by Pat Cummins.

Brett Lee - Australia vs. Bangladesh, 2007

Brett Lee, one of Australia's most feared fast bowlers, became the first player to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup. His hat-trick came against Bangladesh in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007. Lee's fiery spell at Newlands, Cape Town, saw him dismiss Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, and Alok Kapali in consecutive deliveries in the 17th over, finishing with figures of 3/27. This spell saw Bangladesh going down from 108/3 to 108/6 and eventually finishing at 123/8 in 20 overs. Australia won the match comfortably by nine wickets. Lee retired from all formats of cricket in 2015, three years after quitting international cricket. He finished his career with 310 wickets in 76 Tests and 380 wickets in 221 ODIs.

Wanindu Hasaranga - Sri Lanka vs. South Africa, 2021

At the 2021 T20 World Cup, Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga became the third bowler to take a hattrick in the tournament. He achieved this feat in a Super 12 game against South Africa at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Hasaranga dismissed Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, and Dwaine Pretorius, ending with figures of 3/20. Despite the hattrick, Sri Lanka were unable to defend their modest total of 142. An aggressive leg-break bowler, Hasaranga has picked up 84 wickets in 54 ODIs and 110 wickets in 68 T20Is since his debut in 2017. As a lower middle order batsman, he has a batting average of 22.94 in ODIs and 14.88 in T20Is along with a strike rate of 132.14.

Curtis Campher - Ireland vs. Netherlands, 2021

During a Group A Qualifier 3 match of the 2021 T20 World Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, Curtis Campher of Ireland produced a stunning performance against the Netherlands. In a remarkable tenth over, he took four wickets in four consecutive balls, dismantling the Dutch batting line-up. Campher dismissed Colin Ackermann for 10 runs, followed by Ryan ten Doeschate, Scott Edwards, and Pieter Seelaar, all for ducks. This incredible feat left the Netherlands reeling at 56/2, and Campher ended his spell with impressive figures of 4/26. The Dutch were eventually bowled out for a mere 106 runs, which Ireland chased down in 15.1 overs. 25-year-old Campher, since his international debut in 2020, has represented Ireland in five Tests, 37 ODIs and 56 T20Is, picking up 5, 28 and 31 wickets respectively. 

Joshua Little - Ireland vs. New Zealand, 2022

In a Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2022 between Ireland and New Zealand, Ireland pacer Joshua Little took a stunning hattrick in the 19th over. His victims were Kane Williamson, James Neesham, and Mitchell Santner, as he finished with figures of 3/22 at the Adelaide Oval. The hattrick, however, went in vain as New Zealand finished with 185 runs and successfully defended it. Since playing his first international match in 2016, Little has picked up 56, 78 and 6 wickets in 36 Tests, 69 ODIs and 6 T20Is respectively. 

Kagiso Rabada - South Africa vs. England, 2021

Kagiso Rabada, one of the premier fast bowlers in world cricket, claimed a hat-trick against England in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Rabada’s victims were Chris Woakes, Eoin Morgan, and Chris Jordan, as he finished with figures of 3/48 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. This spell helped South Africa defend their total of 189, winning the match by 10 runs. A fearsome pacer who consistently bowls in the 140 to 150 kmph speed, Rabada made his debut for South Africa in 2014 and swiftly rose to prominence. He has so far played 62 Tests, 101 ODIs and 63 T20Is, picking up 291, 157, and 68 wickets respectively. 

Karthik Meiyappan - UAE vs. Sri Lanka, 2022

The first hattrick of the T20 World Cup 2022 was taken by UAE spinner Karthik Meiyappan against Sri Lanka. This also made him the fifth bowler overall to claim a hattrick in the T20 World Cup. owling at the Simonds Stadium in Geelong, Meiyappan dismissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, and Dasun Shanaka in consecutive deliveries, finishing with impressive figures of 3/19 from four overs. Sri Lanka, nevertheless, went on to win the match by 79 runs after bowling out UAE for 73 in a chase of 153. Meiyappan, a 23-year-old leg break bowler, has taken 37 ODI wickets and 23 T20I wickets for the UAE in 31 and 15 matches. 

Pat Cummins – Australia vs, Afghanistan, 2024

After defeating Bangladesh, Australia next faced Afghanistan, with Cummins securing yet another hattrick. Cummins became the first bowler to take two hattricks in a single edition of the T20 World Cup. His victims included Rashid Khan, Karim Janat and Gulbadin Naib. The pacer finished with 3/28 in his 4 overs, but that wasn’t enough to stop Afghanistan from securing a historic win. After posting 148 batting first, the Rashid Khan-led side bowled out Australia for 127, winning by 21 runs. 

Joshua Little - Ireland vs. New Zealand, 2022

In a Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2022 between Ireland and New Zealand, Ireland pacer Joshua Little took a stunning hattrick in the 19th over. Chris Jordan - England vs. USA, 2024

England pacer Chris Jordan took the second hattrick of the 2024 T20 World Cup in a game against the USA. Bowling the 19th over at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, Jordan’s victims were Corey Anderson, Ali Khan, Nosthush Kenjige and Saurabh Netravalkar as he took four wickets in five balls and finished with astonishing figures of 4/10 in 2.5 overs. Jordan became only the second bowler after Ireland's Campher to take four wickets in an over in T20 World Cup. After bowling out USA for 115, England chased down the target in 9.4 overs. 

Pat Cummins - Australia vs. Bangladesh, 2024

Australia’s Pat Cummins took the first hattrick of the T20 World Cup 2024 against Bangladesh in a Super 8 game. In the 18th over of the match, the pacer dismissed Mahmudullah, Mahedi Hasan, and Taskin Ahmed, ending with figures of 3/29 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound. Cummins' spell, along with Adam Zampa's 2 for 24 helped Australia restrict Bangladesh to 140 for 8, before eventually winning the game by 28 runs via the DLS method. Cummins is currently the third-highest wicket-taker for Australia in T20Is, with 66 wickets in 57 matches
