Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and now Virat Kohli - the three icons of India who mastered the art of cricket and took the game to the next level. The sequence in which names are written depicts in itself how the legacy has been carried forward and why the Indian team has managed to be dominant over the generations. 

While Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar played there, Virat Kohli, who is known as The King of Cricket, has taken the world cricket by storm. After making his debut in 2008, he hasn’t looked back and has developed himself into the best batter going around the world of cricket currently. 

Virat Kohli has tasted a huge amount of success in his career and is still breaking numerous records along the way. He has set similar kinds of standards in all three formats, averaging around 50. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI tons and with with way he is going, some more major records are likely under threat. 

Virat Kohli’s greatness is defined by the amount of things that he has achieved. He also has won quite a few ICC awards and in this piece, we take a look at them:

ICC ODI Player of the Year 2012

The first-ever ICC award came for Virat Kohli in 2012 and it was only then when he made his presence felt on the international stage. After struggling to make an impact in the initial years, he found his mojo on the international stage and then didn’t look back, developing himself into the top player in the world. 

In the 31 ODIs that Virat Kohli played in 2012, he scored 1733 runs at an average of 66.65. Not only this, the right-hander also slammed 8 centuries and 6 half-centuries. His best came in the game against Pakistan, where he scored 183 runs in the Asia Cup encounter and helped his team win the game. 

ICC ODI Player of the Year 2017

Virat Kohli’s second ICC award in 2017 when he was awarded ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2017. This was the second time that he was graced with the ODI Cricketer of the Year. The batter displayed incredible consistency throughout the year in the 50-over format and helped his team register some famous wins. 

Virat Kohli was at his best in the ODIs as he mustered 1,818 ODI runs at 82.63. Not only this, he also hit 7 centuries during that period. He hit 7 half-centuries as well and was at his peak during those years, helping the team dominate ODI cricket. 

ICC Cricketer of the Year 2017 

2017 also saw Virat Kohli winning one of the most prestigious ICC awards. He was awarded Cricketer of the Year for his incredible performances across the formats.  The right-hander mustered scored 2,203 Test runs at an average of 77.80 to go with 

5 double hundreds. In ODIs, Kohli hammered 1,818 ODI runs at an average of 82.63 including seven centuries, and 299 T20I runs at a strike rate of 153. 

Kohli was top-notch as the captain of the team during that year as well. Under his leadership, India hardly put a step wrong and was dominating in all three formats. One of the highlights of his leadership was when India registered 9 consecutive series wins in the longest format of the game. 

ICC ODI Player of the Year 2018 

Virat Kohli extended his golden touch with the bat in 2018 as well in the ODIs. He came up with a gigantic effort with the bat and racked up truckloads of runs for the team. After winning the ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2017, he made sure that he won the award in the following year as well, becoming one of the few cricketers to win back-to-back awards. 

Virat Kohli oozed his class with the bat in the ODIs that he played in 2018. The former Indian skipper racked up 1202 runs in 14 ODIs at an average of 133.55. He also slammed 6 centuries and three half-centuries in the games that he played in 2018. His best came against South Africa when he slammed an unbeaten 160 runs. 

ICC Test Player of the Year 2018

Virat Kohli also was awarded ICC Test Player of the Year in 2018 for his incredible contribution with the bat. The right-hander was at the peak of his powers during the year and his form reflected in all three formats of the game. This was also the first time that he won the ICC Test Player of the Year in his career.

During that period, Virat Kohli amassed 1322 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 55.08 with five centuries. He also hit five fifties and his best came against Australia in Perth, where he hit 153 runs. He ended the year as the No.1 ranked Test batter and helped his team win many crucial games. 

ICC Cricketer of the Year 2018

In 2018, Virat Kohli became the first cricketer ever to win all three big awards of ICC as he also bagged ICC Cricketer of the Year.  This comes after his incredible consistency throughout the formats. India mostly played their cricket outside home and hence his performances were vital for the team. 

Virat Kohli amassed 1322 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 55.08 with five centuries, and 1202 runs in 14 ODIs at 133.55, with six centuries. In the T20Is, he mustered 211 runs in 10 games. Under his leadership, India finished No. 1 in the world in the ICC Test rankings and at No. 2 in both ODIs and T20Is. 

ICC Spirit of Cricket 2019

Virat Kohli also won the unique award from ICC in 2019. He was rewarded with a Spirit of Cricket award for his antics on the field for the Australian batter Steve Smith. During the ICC World Cup 2019 game between India and Australia, fans in England were booing Smith over the sandpaper gate incident. 

It was then that Virat Kohli stepped in by the side of Steve Smith and urged the crowd to not boo for the batter. After this, the crowd started cheering for the Australian batter and his gesture, the Indian batter was awarded the ICC Spirit of the Year award.

ICC Men's Cricketer of the Decade  (2011–2020)

Virat Kohli also has won the most prestigious award in the history of the game. He was awarded the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (2011–2020) and was declared as the ICC Men's Cricketer of the Decade. The King of Cricket surely ruled the period between 2011 and 2020 and scored truckloads of runs across the formats. 

During the decade, Virat Kohli amassed 20,396, which was the most by any batter in the 10-year period. He scored all the runs at an average of 56.97, which was the highest average among players with 70+ innings. The premier batter also hit 66 tons and 94 fifties, which was also the most by any batter during that period. He also won the 2011 World Cup as well along with the Champions Trophy 2013 during that period as well. 

ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Decade (2011–2020) 

Not only the cricketer of the year, Virat Kohli also won the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Decade. For his prolific run of form throughout the decade, he was rated far superior to all the other players. The batter was at his best as he scored truckloads of runs at an incredible consistency. 

Virat Kohli was the only player during that decade to score 10,000-plus ODI runs. He also hit 39 centuries and 48 fifties and scored all his runs at an astonishing average of 61.83. Not only this, he was also a gun fielder as he took 62 catches and helped his team register some famous wins with his heroics. 

ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year (2023)

In 2023, Virat Kohli won the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year for the 4th time in his career. He made a solid comeback for his team after enduring a lean phase for almost three years. He came up with a humongous effort with the bat, especially during the ICC World Cup 2023, which was the major reason behind his winning award. 

Overall in 2023, Virat Kohli scored 1377 at an average of 72.47 to go with six centuries and eight half-centuries in 24 innings. He was the leading run-maker in the ICC World Cup 2023 as he slammed 765 runs, which was the highest ever by any batter at a men’s Cricket World Cup. He had an average of 95.62 and also hit three centuries including one in the semi-final against New Zealand. He also broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record for most ODI tons.
