Who Is the Oldest Player in Cricket World Cup History?
Former Dutch cricketer Nolan Clarke is the oldest cricketer to have ever played at the World Cup
The adage "age is just a number" has been seen several times in sports too. Across several sports, we have seen many athletes defy age and continue playing well past what’s often called their "prime years." In tennis, for example, Roger Federer was still competing in his late 30s, and in football, Zlatan Ibrahimovic played top-level football past 40. If you are physically fit, you can continue playing for as long as your body allows.
Cricket, too, has seen players defying age norms. Former India captain MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in the year 2020, is into his 40s now, but still continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Pravin Tambe, now 53, made his IPL debut at the age of 41, becoming the oldest IPL debutant ever. In fact, he didn't even have any professional cricket experience at the time he made his IPL debut. Some cricketers have played well into their 40s, even competing at the highest levels like the Cricket World Cup. In this article, we’ll look at some of the oldest players who have played in the Cricket World Cup, proving that passion for cricket has little to do with age.

Barbados-born former Dutch cricketer Nolan Clarke holds the record for being the oldest cricketer to have ever played at the World Cup. An explosive right-handed batter who loved sending the ball out of the park, Clarke played five matches for the Netherlands at the 1996 ODI World Cup held in India and Pakistan. Born on 22 June 1948, Clarke was 47 years and 240 days old at the time of playing the first of the five World Cup matches in 1996. That not only made him the oldest to feature in a Cricket World Cup, but also the oldest-ever ODI debutant. However, his performance with the bat was underwhelming, as he managed to score just 50 runs across five matches at an average of 10.
"I didn't do it to inspire people, but the Indian public and Pakistan public would say: if a man at 47 years can still run around and play a bit of cricket, well, that is enough hope for people," Clarke told ESPN in an interview.
John Traicos | 44 Years and 306 Days - 1992 World Cup
John Traicos is one of the few cricketers who played international cricket for more than one team. He was 44 years and 306 days old at the time of the 1992 World Cup which was held in Australia and New Zealand. He had earlier also played for Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, and captained them in six matches at the 1987 World Cup. In the 1992 World Cup when Traicos was the oldest player in the tournament, an 18-year-old Sachin Tendulkar made his World Cup debut. In an interview with ESPN, Traicos recalled Tendulkar's match-winning knock against Zimbabwe.
"In the World Cup we lost to India in Hamilton, where Tendulkar, as an 18-year-old, made 81 and was Man of the Match. I was amazed how cleanly he hit the ball, and it was extremely difficult to restrict him and to stop him scoring boundaries," the offspinner told ESPN.

Pakistani-born cricketer Khurram Khan, who played for the United Arab Emirates cricket team from 2004–2015, was the oldest player at the 2015 ODI World Cup at 43 years and 262 days. One of the highlights of Tauqir's career is his ODI debut against India, when he scored a half century and also took the wicket of VVS Laxman. A lower-order batsman and handy offspinner, Tauqir also set the record as the oldest captain to debut in T20I history.
