Premier League Darts 2025: Geordie Darts Ace Chris Dobey Gets Special Message from Newcastle Squad
Geordie darts star Chris Dobey shared how Newcastle United’s squad FaceTimed him before his Premier League match in Cardiff, still celebrating their Carabao Cup win. Dobey, a lifelong fan, used the boost to beat Liverpool-supporting Stephen Bunting, joking he felt sorrier for Bunting’s club than him.

Geordie darts star Chris Dobey was still buzzing heading into week seven of the Premier League in Cardiff, as he soaked in the joy of Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup triumph over Liverpool.
The Magpies’ 2-1 victory at Wembley on Sunday ended a 70-year wait for silverware, and for lifelong fan Dobey, it was a moment to cherish.
While the Newcastle squad continued their celebrations in Dubai during the international break, Dobey had a different kind of battle to focus on—a Premier League basement clash against Liverpool-supporting Stephen Bunting.
With both players sitting at the foot of the league table, there was more than just points at stake, as club pride was on the line once again.
“Yeah, it was brilliant, not just for myself or all the team for the whole city, it's a massive thing to pick up, the first title in what, 70 years," Dobey said.
Buoyed by his football club’s triumph, Dobey channelled that energy into his performance, dismantling Bunting 6-2 to book his spot in the next round.
A first nightly win wasn’t to be, as he later fell to Michael van Gerwen, but the Newcastle faithful had already given him an extra boost before the night’s action.
A Call from Dubai
Before stepping onto the oche, Dobey received a surprise FaceTime from Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, who, along with his teammates, was still in celebratory mode thousands of miles away.
“Before I came over across to the venue tonight, Sean Longstaff actually FaceTimed us, with the lads from Dubai, celebrating and singing the darts tune,” Dobey told SportsBoom.com.
“They're showing their support for me tonight. I really respect that from them, it just wasn’t to be for me tonight.”
Banter with Bunting
Given their club allegiances, Dobey and Bunting’s meeting had an added edge. In the days leading up to the match, Dobey had tried to get in touch with his rival, but the Liverpool fan was nowhere to be found.
“I tried FaceTiming him numerous times. He never answered afterwards,” Dobey said with a laugh. “We had the banter before, we'll have the banter after. He is a great lad, he's passionate about Liverpool and I'm the same with Newcastle. So, it's good you can have that banter between us.”
For Dobey, the real pain wasn’t Bunting’s defeat on the dartboard, but the blow his football team suffered.
“I feel much more sorry for his football than anything,” he joked.
Despite falling short against Van Gerwen, Dobey will take plenty of pride from his own "double" over Liverpool in the space of a few days.
And with the backing of his beloved Newcastle United, he’ll be hoping to carry that momentum into the rest of the Premier League season.
