World number one Luke Humphries continued to carve his name into the history books of darts, hitting his first-ever major televised nine-darter during his first-round clash against Rob Cross on night five of the Premier League in Brighton.
£30,000 Gold Darts
Despite ultimately losing the match 6-4, the significance of the moment far outweighed the £15,000 he could have won on the night. Humphries' perfect leg earned him a truly unique reward—a bespoke set of 18-karat gold darts worth approximately £30,000, thanks to Premier League title sponsor BetMGM.
At the start of the tournament, BetMGM announced an exclusive incentive: any player who achieved a nine-darter during the 17-week roadshow would receive a special set of gold darts. Humphries has now become the first recipient of this prestigious accolade.
What makes the moment even more special is that Humphries had openly set his sights on winning these golden darts.
Back in Belfast
Speaking to us in Belfast after securing his first nightly win of the tournament, he revealed just how much he wanted to claim the unique prize—even suggesting he would rather have them than the equivalent amount in cash.
“It makes you appreciate how lucky you really are. You're in a big business, big companies sponsoring these events. I think that MGM has been a massive, massive bonus for us. They make the tournament better. It's all a bit of fun, it's great.”
“For me, it's not about the money or what it's worth. I want to win them darts just for the fact of it'd be nice to have in your house and little things like that. I'd rather have that than 30 grand in cash,” he told SportsBoom.com.
Now, four weeks later, Humphries has achieved his goal. Immediately after sealing his perfect leg, he expressed his delight at securing the prize, even if he would have preferred to win the match.
“I would have rather won the game tonight, but it’s a nice second prize. When they told us about it in Belfast, I knew I’d love to win one because of how prestigious it could become, and no one’s ever won it.”
MVG’s Head in the Sand
He also shared a humorous moment from earlier in the day when he was having a meal with fellow Premier League star Michael van Gerwen.
Humphries was discussing the golden darts incentive, only to discover that Van Gerwen had no idea about it.
“Michael didn’t know about it. He was like, ‘What are you on about?’ and I was the one that told him that if you hit a nine-darter, you win an 18-karat gold set of darts that are worth about 30 grand. Strangely, it was on my mind tonight and I hit, so it’s a nice little bonus.”
Nothing Feels Better than a Nine
While Humphries was naturally disappointed to lose to Cross, he reflected on the electric atmosphere in Brighton and the special feeling of achieving such a milestone in front of a packed crowd.
He admitted that while he was fully aware of the golden darts incentive, his only focus in the moment was on hitting the final double 12 to complete the nine-darter.
“When you're up on the stage, you're not thinking about what you can win from it. I felt quite confident on the double 12, to be honest. It wasn’t playing on my mind. If there’s money on it, you still feel a little bit of pressure of course, but I just wanted to give the crowd something great.”
“There is a special feeling when you do that because the crowd goes wild and you kind of feel a moment where, you know your heart's going crazy and you're in the moment.”
Humphries may not have taken the win on the night, but his place in Premier League history is now secured as the first-ever player to claim BetMGM's golden darts—a prize he had set his sights on from the very beginning.
