The Quarterfinals are Underway

The final day of the 2024 Ladbrokes UK Open at Butlin’s Minehead commenced with a highly anticipated matchup between world number one Luke Humphries and reigning Masters champion Stephen Bunting. As both players stepped onto the stage, the atmosphere crackled with anticipation, with an unexpected surge of support for Bunting evident among the crowd. Humphries, seeking redemption from their previous televised encounter at the Masters where Bunting emerged victorious, aimed to turn the tables in this pivotal showdown.

A very nervous start to the game for Stephen Bunting as he gifted the opening two legs to Humphries. Bunting looked to have ran away with the second leg to even the game up, but after missing four darts at double, Humphries took out a spectacular 108 checkout to show he meant business on the oche.

Mainstage Nerves for Bunting

Stephen Bunting endured a tense start to the match, conceding the opening two legs to Luke Humphries in a nervous display. Despite showing promise in the second leg, Bunting's missed opportunities on doubles allowed Humphries to capitalise with a stunning 108 checkout, asserting his dominance early on.

The trend of missed chances continued for Bunting as Humphries surged ahead, winning consecutive legs. However, Bunting managed to claw back one leg with an impressive 90 checkout, bringing the score to 4-1 in Humphries' favour as they headed into the first mid-match interval. Despite Bunting's superior scoring, Humphries' clinical precision on doubles afforded him the early lead in the match.

Humphries into Cruise Control

Humphries quickly regained momentum in the following leg, comfortably holding his throw. However, Bunting countered with another strong finish, executing an 84 checkout to narrow the gap to three legs.

Despite Bunting's somewhat resurgence, Humphries maintained control, winning the subsequent three legs with ease. With his average climbing to an impressive 105, Humphries found himself just two legs away from securing a spot in the semi-finals.

Cool Hands going into the Semis

Humphries capitalised on more missed chances from Bunting, seizing the next leg by breaking Bunting’s throw once again. With precision and flair, he closed out the match in emphatic fashion, securing a commanding 10-2 victory with a clinical 13-dart leg.

As Cool Hand Luke cruised to victory, it became evident that dislodging his name from the trajectory towards the UK Open trophy would require something extraordinary. Unfazed by the competition, Humphries effortlessly advanced to become the first player to secure a spot in the semi-finals. With his dominance clear, Humphries awaits the outcome of the final quarter-final match, poised to continue his quest for glory.
