PDC World Darts Championship 2025: Gerwyn Price Targets Premier League Return and Predicts Ally Pally Final Matchup
Gerwyn Price eyes a Premier League return and predicts a World Championship final against Rob Cross after his second-round win at Ally Pally, embracing the role of underdog.
Former world champion Gerwyn Price admits 2024 has been a frustrating year by his own high standards, with the Welshman failing to reach the quarterfinal stage in any televised tournament.
Despite this dip in form, Price believes the pressure is off as he eyes a potential second world title at the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship.
Gerwyn Price’s Relationship with the Premier League
Following his comfortable second-round win over Irish prospect Keane Barry at Alexandra Palace, Price shared his evolving stance on the Premier League, a topic that has divided fans and pundits in recent months.
“I just wanted to get through the first round. I want to enjoy Christmas,” Price said. “It is horrible being home and not being in the tournament. So, for me it was just get through the first round, then whatever comes after that, that's what happens.”
Price had previously expressed his reluctance to accept a Premier League invitation for 2025, citing the gruelling travel demands and packed schedule. However, in a significant shift, the Welshman hinted he would welcome a return to the competition if offered the chance.
“There's a lot of good players out there and if I don't get in the Premier League then it's because somebody else deserves it. But if I have a good run in this, then I'm up for it,” he told SportsBoom.com.
When asked if he had set a minimum target at Ally Pally to secure his Premier League spot, Price confidently replied, “I think I’m already in. Matt [Porter] will tell you.”
His comment drew laughter, as the PDC Chief Executive stood in the background of the press area, leaving little doubt about Price’s ambitions.
Predicting a Final Showdown
Price finds himself in the bottom half of the draw at the World Championship, avoiding tournament favourites Luke Littler and Luke Humphries until a potential final clash. With a smoother path to the final compared to his rivals, Price remains aware of the challenges ahead but is optimistic about his chances.
“People say that they don't look, obviously I look at my path to the final and lifting a trophy,” Price admitted. “If I'm playing against the best, then it brings the best onto me.”
Price acknowledged the threats posed by Joe Cullen and Wessel Nijman, either of whom he could face in the third round after Christmas.
“I know every game's going to be difficult. I haven't played the best all year, but I've got a good bit of confidence after the last couple of exhibitions. So, I'm just like, either Joe Cullen or Wessel [Nijman] let’s say. I’ve got a strong game anyway.”
When asked about the possibility of meeting Littler or Humphries in the final and crafting an underdog narrative, Price joked about his ideal scenario.
“I don't care. I hope they go out. I think it's going to be me and Rob Cross in the final.”
The Road Ahead
Price’s light-hearted confidence reflects his desire to reignite his best form after a challenging year. Now, the Welshman returns home to prepare for his third-round opponent, awaiting the outcome of matches between Nijman, Cameron Carolissen, and Joe Cullen.
With Premier League qualification and a second world title both within reach, Price is ready to let his darts do the talking.
Whether his prediction of a final against Rob Cross comes true remains to be seen, but one thing is certain, Price is determined to remind the world of his prowess on the biggest stage.
