Fan favourite Stephen Bunting returned to the iconic Alexandra Palace stage in style, surviving a nail-biting 3-1 victory against Germany’s Kai Gotthardt.

Yet it wasn’t just his performance that caught the headlines. Among the enthusiastic crowd chanting “let’s go Bunting mental” was a special guest – global pop sensation Ed Sheeran.

Ed Sheeran's 'Bad Habits'

Post-match, Bunting shared his thoughts on playing in front of someone of Sheeran’s stature, showcasing his humour and charm.

“I had a few ‘bad habits’ in that game,” Bunting told SportsBoom.com, cheekily referencing one of Sheeran’s chart-topping hits. “My manager told me earlier that he was here, and I was shell-shocked.”

Reflecting on his knack for attracting high-profile gingers, Bunting added, “I must have something about gingers. I’ve had Prince Harry here before watching me, now Ed Sheeran.”

Despite their football rivalry – Sheeran being a dedicated Ipswich Town supporter and Bunting a passionate Liverpool FC fan – Bunting admitted he holds Sheeran in high regard.

“It’s amazing. I’m a massive fan of his as well, even though he supports Ipswich, he’s sound.”

Interrupt Another Interview

The darting star even referenced a recent moment when Sheeran interrupted Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim’s post-match interview following Ipswich’s 1-1 draw in late November.

“I’m surprised he’s not coming in to disrupt the interview, to be honest,” Bunting joked. “But it would’ve been really nice to meet him.”

Bunting also revealed how his admiration for Sheeran extends beyond his music.

“I’m a massive fan of his music. I’ve got some of his songs flying through my head,” he said.

The moment wasn’t just special for Bunting; his son also got a brief encounter with the music superstar.

“My lad had a few moments with him, which he’ll tell me on the way home.”

Bunting emphasised the importance of having high-profile figures attending darts events.

“We need high-profile people coming to watch us. It really does spur us on when we’re on that stage,” he concluded.

For Bunting, it was a night of triumph on the oche and a memorable brush with one of music’s biggest stars.
