Luke Humphries kicked off his title defence at the 2024 World Grand Prix Darts in Leicester with a thrilling comeback against reigning Masters champion and crowd favorite Stephen Bunting.

The Comeback Kid

The world number one found himself in deep trouble early on as Bunting dominated the first set with a 3-0 whitewash, including a stunning 115 checkout.

Humphries, on the verge of elimination, was two legs down in the second set, and Bunting even had a dart at double 16 to finish him off. But a miss from Bunting allowed Humphries to claim his first leg, sparking a dramatic turnaround.

From that moment, Humphries took control, winning the next two legs to level the match at 1-1. He then showed exactly why he’s the best in the world, crushing Bunting in the final set to complete an epic comeback and advance to the next round.

Leave the Football Chants at Home

Despite the victory, Humphries was less than impressed with the Leicester crowd, who spent much of the match singing football chants.

“Let’s leave football at home, we’re at the darts now,” Humphries said, urging fans to stop the chants.

“I support Leeds [United], everyone knows that, but let's leave the football chants at home. We are darts players, we're not footballers.”

He added, “If I'm in a football field and Leeds are playing against whoever and they're chanting it to me whilst I’m there, then I'll accept it, love it, and embrace it, but it's just constant.”

‘Leeds Aren’t Falling Apart’

Humphries ended the interview with a cheeky nod to the fans’ favourite chant.

“I love the banter, and I love the ‘Leeds are falling apart’ chant, but this isn’t a football arena,” he joked.

"I know it’s all a bit of fun, but Leeds weren’t falling apart tonight unfortunately for them [the fans]. It didn't affect me to win that game.”
