In a much-anticipated second round showdown at the 2024 World Matchplay, former titleholder James Wade went head-to-head with reigning champion Nathan Aspinall.

Prior to the tournament, Aspinall had hinted at stepping away from competition for two to three months to address a serious injury in his right shoulder.

Wade’s Early Control

Out of the blue, Aspinall clawed his way back into contention, winning the next three legs, including a 109 three-dart checkout, narrowing the deficit to 4-3.

Wade secured another leg, but Aspinall responded with an impressive 86 finish on the bullseye, keeping within striking distance at one leg behind.

The Stockport-native persisted with his comeback, levelling the game at 5-5 as the players headed into the second break.

A Tense Affair

The next six legs couldn’t be separated as each player comfortably held their darts without much trouble. With the game sat at 8 legs apiece, it was impossible to call a winner.

The Machine Seizes Control

Wade seized control of the match when he broke Aspinall's throw in the 17th leg, capitalising on some errant darts from Aspinall to edge ahead 9-8.

Aspinall struggled to maintain his composure in the closing stages, which allowed Wade to secure his passage to the next round unchallenged.

The Machine confidently wrapped up the contest with two consecutive legs, clinching a hard-fought 11-8 win.

Wade now looks ahead to a tough quarterfinal clash against Ross Smith.
