As the tension mounts at the Winter Gardens, all eyes are on Michael van Gerwen and Andrew Gilding, set to renew their rivalry on the grand stage of the World Matchplay quarterfinals.

Van Gerwen, fresh off a hard-fought victory over Joe Cullen, is gearing up for a crucial rematch against Gilding, who famously clinched the UK Open title against him last year.

MVG Won’t Make the Same Mistake Twice

Reflecting on their previous encounter at the 2023 UK Open final, where Gilding surprisingly emerged victorious, van Gerwen expressed a steely determination not to repeat history.

"I won't make the same mistake twice," asserted the Dutchman, highlighting his eagerness for redemption on this significant stage.

Underrated Gilding

Acknowledging Gilding's skill and underdog status, van Gerwen emphasised the need to approach the match with unwavering focus.

"We all know Andrew is a good player and he's probably one of the most underrated players on the tour when he's on it. He can be dangerous," van Gerwen commented, aware of the challenges posed by his opponent's methodical pace.

"Of course I have to deal with his slow pace, but I think I’ve got enough experience to deal with that situation."

The Pressure Is On

When asked about the pressure heading into the match, van Gerwen swiftly turned the focus towards Gilding.

"Yeah, a hundred percent. I need to make sure I keep playing well and make sure I put him under pressure constantly," he asserted confidently.

"I don’t approach any game different; they have to change towards me."

Van Gerwen Will Be Furious

Gilding, on the other hand, remains composed despite the stakes and the impending challenge from van Gerwen.

Following his convincing 11-5 win over Krzysztof Ratajski earlier in the night, Gilding downplayed the advantage of his previous victory over the Dutchman.

"Probably not with Michael. He is just going to step up this time. That’s what makes him a winner, he’s going to be furious," Gilding noted.

As both players prepare to step onto the Winter Garden stage, the atmosphere is charged with anticipation.

Van Gerwen, fuelled by the desire to reclaim his supremacy, faces off against Gilding, who seeks to maintain his momentum and defy expectations once again.
