As Noa-Lynn van Leuven prepares for her second appearance at the 2024 Women’s World Matchplay, the stakes are higher than ever.

Van Leuven, who made history as the first transgender woman to compete in a televised PDC tournament, is now aiming to become the first transgender woman to win such an event. Her journey is not just a personal milestone but an inspirational beacon for transgender athletes worldwide.

The 27-year-old began contemplating her gender transition at the age of 16 and embarked on her transition journey during her teenage years. Having played darts for nine years prior to her transition, she took a break from the sport before making a triumphant return on the PDC’s Women’s Series in 2022.

A Historic Moment in the Making

Reflecting on the broader impact of a potential victory at the Women’s World Matchplay, van Leuven acknowledged the significance it holds for the transgender community.

"It would be very huge. I know a lot of trans people are watching this. I know they're looking up to me. Winning this would be really big," she told SportsBoom.com, understanding the inspiration her success could provide to others in similar situations.

Confidence from Recent Form

In terms of her form going into the tournament, van Leuven is confident. She has recently defeated all of the other seven qualifiers in the Women’s Series at different points this season.

"I played some amazing players over the past few months. I played some really good games, and I've beat everyone in the women's game, so I know I can do it," she asserted.

Support from the PDC

The support from the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) has been instrumental in her journey.

"I've been getting so much support from the PDC," van Leuven stated, highlighting the organisation’s role in her ongoing success and well-being.

Overcoming Adversity and Looking Forward

Despite facing mental health challenges recently, van Leuven is entering the tournament with renewed vigour. "A few weeks ago, I was in a bad shape. Now I'm feeling better and I'm really looking forward to this event," she shared, showcasing her resilience and readiness to compete.

Noa-Lynn van Leuven’s story is one of perseverance, courage, and determination. As she steps onto the stage at the 2024 Women’s World Matchplay, she carries with her the hopes and dreams of many.

Her participation and potential victory are not just personal achievements but monumental steps forward for transgender representation in sports.
