Two-time World Champion Gary Anderson, uncommonly unseeded for this year’s World Matchplay, faced off against Michael Smith, one half of England's recent World Cup of Darts winning duo.

Anderson’s Early Surge

The Flying Scotsman came out of the gate strong, winning the first three legs of the match.

Anderson should have entered the first mid-session interval with a 5-0 lead but missed opportunities at double 20 allowed Smith to get back into the match, resulting in a 3-2 scoreline in the Scotsman’s favour.

Bully Boy Battles Back

After falling behind, Smith took control of the game, drawing on his recent successes to exploit Anderson's growing vulnerability despite the latter's strong start.

Smith convincingly claimed the next four legs, surging to a 6-4 lead with his average climbing above 95.

Though Anderson initially led 3-0, the momentum clearly shifted towards the St Helens-native. He swiftly secured the next leg, establishing a commanding 7-4 advantage as they headed into the second interval.

Ruthless from Smith

Anderson managed to break Smith's streak in the 11th leg, claiming his first win in eight legs by breaking Smith's throw.

However, Smith swiftly regained command, showcasing a three-dart average exceeding 101 as he surged to an 8-4 lead.

In top form, Smith appeared formidable, executing an impressive 84 checkout to move within one leg of advancing to the next round. Although Anderson secured one more leg, it wasn't sufficient as Smith sealed a convincing 10-5 triumph.

As Anderson endured a disappointing defeat to the 2023 World Champion, the fans in attendance appropriately sang the England football chant, 'Scotland get battered', in the background.

Smith, now advancing, awaits the winner of tonight's match between Chris Dobey and Ritchie Edhouse.
