Following his impressive 11-8 victory over defending champion Nathan Aspinall in the 2024 World Matchplay, James Wade didn't just talk about his performance on the oche; he took the opportunity to voice his thoughts on the state of modern darts and his perspective on emerging talent, notably directing his attention towards Luke Littler.

Put Respect on James Wade’s Name

In a candid and unsolicited post-match interview, Wade, known for his straightforward demeanour, didn't mince words when discussing the respect, he feels he deserves from the newer generation of darts enthusiasts.

"I'm James Wade. I've won more than every other dart player apart from Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen. There you go. That's my message," Wade told SportsBoom.com, addressing what he perceives as a lack of acknowledgment from the media and the public.

Wade continued, expressing his belief that the media has not given him the recognition he deserves throughout his career. "I should have been celebrated a little bit different, but I've not been because I haven't done myself any favours," he remarked pointedly.

Wade’s Controversial Views on Littler

However, Wade's commentary took a particularly intriguing turn when he shifted focus to Luke Littler, the teenage sensation whose rapid ascent has garnered attention.

"I heard Glen Durrant say he’ll [Luke Littler] either dominate for only two years or over 10. I’m not sure which one it’ll be, but I do actually agree with that," Wade commented.

Wade then offered a somewhat cautionary perspective on Littler's meteoric rise, hinting at a potential downturn in the young player's career.

"Let's be honest, Luke's probably earned more money than most dart players, if not all dart players, in a year of his existence. So, he doesn’t need to play darts now," Wade observed, acknowledging Littler's financial success and influence.

Littler Will have a Downturn

"He's influential and financially viable and a great pull. But I'm interested in seeing what he's doing. He will have a downturn and that's a hundred percent it'll happen," Wade predicted.

"He [Luke Littler] will struggle, and he will find things hard and then we'll see what he's really about," Wade added, emphasising the inevitable challenges Littler may face as his career progresses.

In closing, Wade offered a final perspective on Littler, urging support rather than criticism. "I hope everyone gets behind him a little bit and doesn't slate him. When that does happen, and it will happen," Wade concluded, leaving his thoughts open-ended but firmly stated.
