Nigerian international goalkeeper Christiana Obia is charting a new course in her career after joining Albanian champions FK Apollonia.

The former Edo Queens standout has opened up about her journey from local football in Nigeria to the European stage, her ambitions for the future, and the challenges that have shaped her career.

After securing a move to Albanian champions FK Apollonia, Nigerian international goalkeeper Christiana Obia has shared her excitement about this new chapter in her career, her goals for the future, and the journey that led her from Edo Queens to European football.

In this exclusive interview, the former Osun Babes and Rivers Angels shot-stopper also reflects on the role of hard work and determination in her rise to prominence and offers quality advice for young goalkeepers.

Goals and Expectations in Albania On Joining FK Apollonia

"Joining FK Apollonia feels amazing," Obia told SportsBoom.com, with her voice filled with joy. "It’s a dream come true to be playing here in Europe. I’m so grateful to be part of this great team, and I hope to be a positive influence on the squad. My heart is full of joy as I begin this new chapter."

Looking ahead, the talented goalkeeper, who was part of Rivers Angels continental campaign at the maiden CAF Women´s Champions League in Egypt three years ago, outlined her goals for the season.

"My main objectives here are to win the league, secure Cups, and hopefully play in the Champions League. Personally, I aim to be the best goalkeeper in the Albanian league. I also want to represent Nigeria well, both on and off the pitch, and I believe these goals are achievable."

The Journey From Edo Queens to Apollonia

Looking back on her journey, the former Nigeria youth international credited her time at Edo Queens for playing a pivotal role in her development.

"Edo Queens really shaped me," she said. "The club instilled a sense of hard work, focus, and determination in me, which were key factors in my move to Apollonia.

"The support I received from the team, especially the invitation to the Super Falcons camp, gave me the confidence to take this step."

Obia had a dream debut with FK Apollonia days after she arrived in Europe, keeping a clean sheet in an away match against Tirana.

"It was an incredible feeling to start my career here with a clean sheet," she said. "It was a tough game, but I’m happy to have contributed to the team’s victory. My first clean sheet was a huge morale boost, and I’m confident I can keep improving and achieve even more."

Winning the 2019 African Games Gold and NWFL Triumph

One of the defining moments of Obia's career came with the Nigeria Women's football team at the 2019 African Games in Morocco, where she helped secure a gold medal.

A year after her switch from Rivers Angels, she made history as she inspired Edo Queens to its first-ever Nigeria Women Football League Premiership title.

"Winning the gold was incredible. It was a dream come true," she recalled. "Also, winning my first Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership trophy with Edo Queens was special.

"We had so much success during my time there, including preseason wins, the Sheroes Cup and the Betsy Obaseki Women's Football Tournament (BOWFT). That success boosted my career, and I’m truly grateful."

Notably, winning the women's football gold medal with Nigeria in the Morocco 2019 African Games shaped Obia in more ways than one.

"That experience taught me so much about unity, sacrifice, and focus," she explained. "The team was united, and we worked hard together.

"The final against Cameroon was intense, but we remained united, especially during the penalty shootout. That moment reminded me that football is all about teamwork and that mental preparation is key."

Navigating Moment of Goalkeeping Struggles

As is the case with many professional athletes, she also faced her share of challenges and explained how she overcame them.

"There were times when I had to juggle school and football, and it wasn’t easy," she said. "Meeting expectations is always tough, but you have to push yourself to work harder.

"It wasn’t easy, but my determination and faith got me through. One of the highlights of my journey was winning Best Goalkeeper at the All-Stars during the Amalgamation Game. That recognition gave me the morale boost I needed to keep going."

Joining the Growing List of Nigerian Goalkeepers in Europe

As a part of the increasing number of Nigerian women goalkeepers in Europe, the 23-year-old expressed pride in joining such an accomplished company.

"I feel so blessed to be part of this growing list of Nigerian goalkeepers playing in Europe. I admire players like Chiamaka Nnadozie, who are doing wonderfully on both the African and global stage. It’s inspiring to see how Nigerian goalkeepers are excelling. We’re strong, skilled, and determined, and I believe we can stand out on the global stage."

Breaking Into the Super Falcons Ranks

Looking forward, Obia is optimistic about her chances of breaking into the Super Falcons squad. "I believe that with hard work, I will get my opportunity," she said.

"I’ll keep working to earn that call-up. I’m focused on making a positive impact in every game, keeping clean sheets, and making key saves. I’m confident that my experience in Europe will help me grow and contribute to the Super Falcons if given the chance."

"I believe consistency is key," she said when asked about her goals for the future. "I’m working hard to maintain a high level of performance, keep clean sheets, and make more saves. I’m constantly pushing myself to be better, both individually and as part of the team."

Advice to Young Goalkeepers

Obia encouraged young and aspiring goalkeepers: "Believe in your dreams. With hard work, determination, and focus, you can achieve anything.

"I started out playing school competitions, winning the Best Goalkeeper award in 2013, and that was when my journey began. I stayed focused, worked hard, and kept my vision clear. Never give up, even through trials—just hold on to God and trust the process."
