‘Ekong Has Done Well, But It’s Time to Move On’, Says Sam Sodje
Former Nigerian international Sam Sodje has urged the Super Eagles to address defensive frailties and make bold managerial decisions ahead of the 2025 AFCON following a disappointing loss to Rwanda. Sodje calls for a defensive coach, replacing aging defenders, and questions Austine Eguavoen's leadership.
As the Super Eagles prepare for the 2025 AFCON, the team faces a critical juncture. According to Sam Sodje, Addressing defensive frailties and making bold managerial decisions will be essential to reclaim their status as a dominant force in African football.
Former Nigerian international Sam Sodje has urged the Super Eagles' technical crew to focus on scouting talented young defenders to address the aging defense line.
This call comes in the wake of the Super Eagles' disappointing 2-1 loss to Rwanda in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, a defeat that shattered their hopes of remaining unbeaten in the campaign.
Costly Defensive Errors Against Rwanda
The Super Eagles had initially taken the lead through AC Milan winger Samuel Chukwueze in the first half. However, defensive lapses and poor goalkeeping allowed Rwanda's Amavubis to secure an unlikely victory in front of Nigerian fans.
Though this loss might not seem catastrophic in isolation, it has amplified concerns about the team’s defensive weaknesses and their inability to keep clean sheets.
Call for a Defensive Coach
Speaking with SportsBoom.com, Sodje emphasized the necessity of improving the defensive setup.
“We have conceded far too many goals, and to succeed in competitions, a solid defense is essential,” he said. “The team clearly needs a defensive coach. If there is one, they aren’t delivering because we don’t look convincing enough to keep clean sheets.”
Austine Eguavoen’s side has conceded three goals in their last two qualifiers and allowed a worrying 12 shots on goal against Benin Republic and four at home to Rwanda.
Replacing Aging Defenders
Sodje also stressed the importance of identifying young defenders to replace Captain William Troost-Ekong and Semi Ajayi, who are both in their 30s.
“We need to scout for better defenders, both in terms of talent and personality. No disrespect to the current players—they’ve done well. Ekong, for example, has served the country admirably, but it’s time to start finding his replacement. He struggled in the matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda,” Sodje explained.
The former Reading defender believes relying on aging center-backs is unsustainable for future success.
Doubts Over Eguavoen’s Leadership
Sodje also questioned Eguavoen’s ability to address these issues before next year’s AFCON. He urged the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to consider the best managerial option for the team.
“I don’t think hiring a foreign coach is necessarily the solution; it’s about finding the right person for the job. However, Eguavoen hasn’t done himself any favors with his recent performances. Against Rwanda and even Benin Republic, the players didn’t give their best.”
Sodje labeled the performances as disappointing and expressed doubts about Eguavoen’s suitability for a permanent role.
“Based on these results, I don’t think Eguavoen has made a strong case to be appointed permanently,” he concluded.
