Nigerian football legend Garba Lawal has suggested that Emmanuel Dennis should seek a move away from Nottingham Forest in the upcoming transfer window to revive his stalled career.

A Bright Start at Watford, Followed by Struggles at Forest

Dennis made a strong impression during Watford's 2021-22 Premier League campaign, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists despite the club's relegation. However, his £20 million move to Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2022 failed to yield similar success.

In his first season with Forest, Dennis managed only five goal involvements (two goals, three assists) in 25 matches, far below his previous standards. His situation worsened in the following season when he was relegated to the bench and later loaned to Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir in September 2023.

Unsuccessful Loan Spells in Turkey and England

The loan move to Istanbul Basaksehir proved unproductive, with Dennis parting ways with the club after just six months and eight appearances without any goal contributions.

Returning to England, he completed the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Watford in the Championship. Although he showed glimpses of his ability, Watford chose not to make the loan deal permanent.

Current Situation at Nottingham Forest

Dennis has fallen out of favor at Forest and was not registered for the 2024-25 season. His last appearance for the club came in May 2023 against Crystal Palace. According to The Athletic, Dennis is now surplus to requirements, and Forest is expected to offload him in January.

Reports suggest interest from Turkish side Adana Demirspor, while his former club Club Brugge is also rumored to be interested. However, Nottingham Forest's asking price could complicate any potential deal.

Garba Lawal’s Perspective on Dennis’ Future

Reflecting on Dennis’ struggles, Lawal stated in an interview with SportsBoom.com: "Last season, I watched some of his games at Watford, and he was performing well.

"However, this season has been very challenging for him. I'm not sure what happened between him and Nottingham Forest's coach, but it's always tough for a player when he's not getting game time, especially in a situation like Dennis'."

Lawal believes a move away from Forest could be the solution: "He's been left out completely, and that puts a player's future in limbo. If the club has decided to sell him, it could be a good move for him to gain more playing time and get his career back on track. He has what it takes to play at the top level. The earlier both sides find a solution, the better for him."

Concerns About Discipline and Attitude

Despite his undeniable talent, Dennis’ career has been marred by allegations of indiscipline and poor attitude. He reportedly clashed with officials at Club Brugge and Cologne, where his loan spell was cut short, before briefly resurrecting his career at Watford.

At Nottingham Forest, reports claim his attitude frustrated club officials, leading to his exclusion from the first team and demotion to the youth squad.

Lawal’s Advice: Stay Positive and Professional

Lawal stressed the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and professional attitude: "It's crucial to stay positive and maintain inner conviction, the right mentality, and a good attitude. Without these qualities, no player can succeed.

"Even if a coach doesn’t favor you, it’s essential to show up for training and give your best effort. Prove that you have what it takes to play for the team, or else you'll continue giving the coach reasons to leave you out."

A January Move: The Key to Revival?

As the January transfer window approaches, Emmanuel Dennis faces a pivotal moment in his career. A move to a club where he can secure regular playing time may be the lifeline he needs to rediscover the form that once made him one of Nigeria’s brightest football talents.
