From Watford Flop to Serie A Superstar: The Maduka Okoye Redemption Story
Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye's journey from past struggles at Watford to becoming a standout player for Serie A side Udinese showcases his resilience and determination to succeed.
Maduka Okoye, Udinese’s standout keeper, is one of .making waves in Europe’s top leagues. His journey—from Germany’s lower tiers to a breakthrough at Sparta Rotterdam, a tough stint at Watford, and a rise in Serie A—highlights his resilience as he now eyes a stable spot with Nigeria’s national team.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Udinese's goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is one of only two African goalkeepers currently securing regular playing time in Europe’s top five leagues. The other is Cameroonian international Andre Onana.
Okoye's path to becoming Udinese’s undisputed number one wasn’t straightforward. It took time for him to settle into Serie A following a challenging stint at Watford in England.
As recently as 2019, the now 25-year-old was playing for Fortuna Düsseldorf II in Germany’s fourth tier. However, his career breakthrough came in 2020 when he joined Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Success at Sparta Rotterdam
Okoye quickly made an impact at Sparta, where he saved 68% of the shots he faced and helped lead the team, known as the Castle Lords, to an eighth-place finish.
His impressive performances earned him the club’s Player of the Season award and a nomination for the Eredivisie Golden Glove.
In his first season at Sparta, Okoye made 31 appearances. His standout performances drew the interest of Ajax Amsterdam, but he ultimately opted for a move to English club Watford.
Move to Watford and Challenges
At Watford, however, Okoye struggled for game time, as he was the third-choice goalkeeper behind Daniel Bachmann and Ben Hamer.
His only appearances for the Hornets came in a Carabao Cup defeat to MK Dons and an FA Cup loss to Reading, before his transfer to Udinese.
Rise at Udinese
Okoye finished his first season in Italy as a fan favorite, helping Udinese secure Serie A survival in the final game of the campaign. Given his opportunity by coach Gabriele Cioffi midway through the season, Okoye seized it and has since become a mainstay.
Former Nigerian international and assistant coach Alloy Agu expressed his delight in seeing Okoye proving his quality with a strong season in Serie A after his struggles at Watford. "Maduka Okoye is proving himself as a solid goalkeeper at Udinese." Alloy Agu told SportsBoom.com.
It's difficult to secure the starting role at top European clubs, but Okoye has made it look easy.

"However, he can't afford to relax—he needs to keep working hard. I’ve always known he was talented, even back in his days at Düsseldorf. I saw his potential early on and brought him into the national team, even though not everyone believed in him.
"For a goalkeeper to make the progress Okoye has, moving from Germany to the Netherlands, then England, and now Italy, it’s no fluke." He continued
"There’s clearly something special about him, and that's what led us to bring him into the national team. He’s one of the best in Africa right now, with not only talent but the ideal combination of age, height, and, crucially, time on his side.
Interest from Inter Milan
This summer, Inter Milan attempted to sign the 6’7” keeper, but negotiations fell through as Udinese set a €15 million asking price. Okoye is currently valued at €9.5 million, placing him among the most expensive African goalkeepers.
"He's young, with impressive qualities, and if joining a bigger club makes him happy, that’s a choice he can make—but it's not for me to decide." Agu said.
International Career with Nigeria
Despite his strong club performances, Okoye has yet to fully establish himself on the international stage.
Since his debut in 2019, he has earned just 18 caps for Nigeria’s national team and has faced criticism for inconsistent performances.
He was notably criticized following a high-profile error against Tunisia in the Africa Cup of Nations, which led him to take a brief hiatus from international duty.
Back up role with Nigeria
Since his return, Okoye remains a backup option for the Super Eagles, with Stanley Nwabali currently preferred as the starting goalkeeper.
"I brought both Okoye and Nwabali to the Super Eagles. Nwabali debuted against Mexico in Los Angeles, while Okoye made his debut against Brazil. I’ve trained both, and it’s rewarding to see them thriving." Alloy Agu added.
"At times, a break is necessary to refocus, especially during tough periods, but now Okoye is back, performing well at Udinese.
"Having two quality goalkeepers on the Nigerian team at the same time is rare, and it’s a big advantage for the Super Eagles.
Agu added that Okoye will need to show patience as he works to reclaim his spot in the national team. "In the Super Eagles, the goalkeeping position is crucial and unique. Right now, Nwabali is doing well, and Okoye will need to wait for his chance.
His focus should be on playing regularly and working hard at Udinese, so he’s ready when his next opportunity with the national team arises.
