Exclusive: Glory Ogbonna Discusses Stellar Form at Besiktas and Nigeria Snub
Nigerian defender Glory Ogbonna excels at Besiktas in Turkey, attributing her success to hard work. She also expresses pride in Edo Queens and remains committed to the Super Falcons. Despite not being called up, she is ready to represent Nigeria and advises young defenders to stay dedicated.
Nigerian defender Glory Ogbonna has opened up about her exceptional performances with Turkish side Besiktas, her pride in former club Edo Queens, and her continued aspirations for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s national team.
Before joining Besiktas, Ogbonna began her professional career in Sweden in 2022 with Umea IK, before moving to Turkey the same summer to play for former champions ALG Spor. Her time at the Gaziantep-based earned her UEFA Women's Champions League debut.
Adapting to Life and Impressive Form in Turkey
After more than two years in the Turkish league, Ogbonna has fully adapted to the demands of the competition. Following a strong performance last season, which included a goal, she has been instrumental in Besiktas remarkable seven-match winning streak against teams like Cekmekoy, Unye Kadın, Trabzonspor, Bornova, Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Amed.
"I’ve really learned to understand the playing style here and adapt to the system," Ogbonna explained in an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com. "It has made things easier for me, and I believe this adaptability is a key factor in my strong form this season."
Ogbonna attributes her consistent performances to her tireless work ethic and unwavering commitment. "This season has been fantastic, just like last season," she said. "It all comes down to hard work and dedication. I’m always focused on improving and giving my best."
Ending Fenerbahce’s Unbeaten Streak
One of Ogbonna’s standout moments came when Besiktas ended arch-rivals Fenerbahçe’s unbeaten run in a thrilling Istanbul derby.
She credits the team’s success to their collective effort and unity. "We work together to help and motivate one another," she noted. "The key is covering for each other’s mistakes and supporting each other throughout the game."
Pride in Edo Queens’ CAF Champions League Success
As a former captain of Edo Queens, Ogbonna expressed great pride in the team’s impressive performance in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League.
"Watching them top their group was such a proud moment for me," she shared. "Their fighting spirit, especially in their match against Mamelodi Sundowns, was incredible. I wish them all the best as they continue their journey."
Addressing Super Falcons Absence
The 25-year-old has had a distinguished career, featuring twice in the U20 Women's World Cup and winning the 2018 Africa Women's Cup of Nations. She also made her mark at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Despite her standout form, Ogbonna has been absent from the Super Falcons since the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. However, she remains resilient and committed to representing her country when called upon.
"Not being selected since the World Cup doesn’t mean I’ve stopped playing well," Ogbonna explained. "Coaches make the decisions, and it’s up to them. But I’m always ready to represent Nigeria whenever needed."
She added, "The national team is my pride. It’s my country, and I want to contribute to its success. My dream is to be part of the Super Falcons’ journey to even greater glory."
Advice for Aspiring Defenders
For young defenders looking to follow in her footsteps, Ogbonna emphasized the importance of dedication, loyalty, and belief in the process. "Hard work is key," she advised. "Talent alone isn’t enough—grace is important too. Stay focused, trust the process, and believe in your abilities."
With her stellar performances at Besiktas and a positive outlook for the future, Ogbonna continues to inspire both on and off the pitch as she strives toward her goals for both club and country.
