Augustine Eguavoen, Super Eagles Interim Coach and Technical Adviser, has orchestrated what many fans consider a footballing renaissance. In a country where football is more than a sport, it's a unifying force. His leadership has reignited the passion of millions, bringing hope in challenging times.

Eguavoen shared with us his journey, the challenges faced, and his unwavering belief in the collective strength of his team.

The Turning Point: A Team Reborn

Fresh off the back of some lackluster performances, Eguavoen was handed the reins of a dispirited squad. But instead of buckling under pressure, he galvanized the team with a clear vision and unwavering faith.

“Everybody's very happy,” he began during an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com. “But we're not going to relax. We're going to keep going; we're not going to take our foot off the pedal.”

Eguavoen credited much of the turnaround to the players' discipline and camaraderie. “I would say a big thank you to the boys. When I came in, the respect and discipline they showed were important. The confidence from the NFF leadership also helped me relax. They assured me of their 100% support. My backroom staff deserves credit too, it’s been a successful journey."

For Eguavoen, mutual respect is a cornerstone of his leadership. “I’m not someone who wants to control people unnecessarily. I give freedom and responsibility. When you respect people, they reciprocate.”

Tactical Mastery: Building from Strengths

When asked about his approach to strategy, Eguavoen emphasized the importance of collective effort. “In football, it’s about the strength of your opponents and your own weaknesses. We plan our game accordingly. We operate individually, in line, and collectively. The respect we show one another translates to our performance on the pitch.”

He also touched on the broader significance of football for Nigerians. “Times are tough economically, not just in Nigeria but globally. Right now, football is one of the few things that brings joy to our people. When we win, it takes away the pain, even if for a moment. It’s why I tell the players: keep winning and keep that smile on their faces.”

Team Selection: The Balancing Act

Team selection under Eguavoen is a meticulous process, balancing talent, form, and experience. “We have players all over the world, including in the NPFL, who can do a good job,” he noted.

“But people complain about players not being regular in their teams and still getting invited. We’ve addressed this with the NFF leadership. To be invited, you must be regular in your club, have a certain percentage of games, and have prior experience.”

However, the tight schedule leaves little room for experimentation. “With games just three or four days apart, I’ve had to rely on players I know and have worked with. We can’t risk bringing in someone unfamiliar without adequate time to integrate them.”

For Eguavoen, patience is key. “Nigerians should please understand. After qualification, we’ll have time for friendlies and to tweak the team. Right now, we’re focused on minimizing errors and getting results.”

Eyes on the World Cup: Preparing for the Global Stage

With the World Cup qualifiers looming, Eguavoen is optimistic but realistic about the road ahead. “This team is very strong and talented, but we’ve not had enough time together. The longest we’ve stayed as a group is four days. We need to find more time to train and gel.”

His strategy is straightforward: treat every game like a final. “We might not always play beautifully, but the points matter. Once qualification is secured, we’ll have time to refine things. For now, minimal errors are acceptable, but we must stay focused.”

The Legacy of Leadership

Having worked with multiple generations of Super Eagles players, Eguavoen’s experience is unparalleled. His emphasis on respect, discipline, and collective effort has reinvigorated a team that many had written off.

As he prepares the team for the challenges ahead, one thing is clear: under Augustine Eguavoen’s stewardship, the Super Eagles are soaring once again.
