Exclusive: "We Needed to Give the Boys Belief" – Imama Amapakabo Reflects on Abia Warriors' Crucial Victory
Abia Warriors broke their winless streak with a 2-0 victory, reigniting hope. Coach Imama Amapakabo shares insights on tactical tweaks, Antoine's impact, and lessons learned. The team is focused on building momentum and climbing back into contention in the league.
After enduring a challenging stretch of three losses and a draw in their last four games, Abia Warriors finally tasted victory with a resounding 2-0 win.
The much-needed triumph not only broke their winless streak but also reignited hope within the squad and fanbase.
In an exclusive interview with SportsBoom.com, head coach Imama Amapakabo shared insights into the emotions in camp, the tactical tweaks that led to the win, and how the team stayed focused during their tough spell.
"It’s a Step Forward" – Relief and Renewed Belief in Camp
Reflecting on the mood within the squad, Amapakabo revealed the sense of relief and determination that has swept through the team.
"Well, Very good. At least we'll be able to build up from here," he said. "Having played about four games without a win, it tends to take the sail out of most teams, but we needed to keep our heads. We needed to change formations, and we needed to give the boys belief."
For Amapakabo, maintaining composure and instilling confidence in his players was key to navigating the storm.
Tactical Tweaks That Made the Difference
Amapakabo credited the team’s turnaround to a series of tactical adjustments, particularly the introduction of striker Antoine. "The introduction of Antoine alongside Megwo was an important tactical adjustment," he explained.
"We knew their attention would be on Megwo, so we needed another player with a lot of physicality and strength in the attack to take the pressure off him."
He also highlighted the team’s ability to adapt to the opposition’s unexpected formation.
"Initially, we thought they were going to play 5-3-2, but they came with a 1-4-3-3. We changed the narratives. We kept their captain from exploiting a free role, and our two strikers pressed hard on their centre-backs, putting pressure on them and preventing them from winning second balls in the middle."
Antoine’s Redemption and the Turning Point
For Coach Amapakabo, one moment stood out as the turning point in the game: Antoine’s goal.
"I challenged Antoine to try and get a goal before the game, and at least he was able to get it," Amapakab osaid. "That will build his confidence. Having missed a header before that, all he needed was to find the back of the net to change the game for us."
Amapakabo believes this goal will be pivotal for Antoine’s confidence moving forward, adding, "I think going forward, his confidence will be back."
Lessons Learned and the Path Ahead
The victory not only brought back belief but also provided valuable lessons for Amapakabo and his team as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
"I think winning 2-0 will bring back confidence into the team," Amapakabo noted. "We’re reintroducing players who haven’t played for some time to give them a sense of belonging and belief in their role going forward."
Looking ahead to their next game against Shooting Stars, Amapakabo acknowledged the difficulty of the task while emphasizing adaptability.
"We know Ibadan is a tough ground, and Shooting Stars are coming off a 2-0 loss to Remo Stars. Every game comes with different tactics and formations. We’ll plan accordingly to get results and continue building momentum."
A Season Reignited
While the road ahead remains challenging, Abia Warriors’ victory has set a new tone for the rest of the season.
With renewed confidence, tactical flexibility, and belief restored within the squad, Amapakabo and his team are determined to climb back into contention and make their mark in the league.
