From humble beginnings in Jega, Kebbi to gracing the grandest stages of European football, Zaidu Sanusi has forged a path few can emulate.
The FC Porto and Super Eagles defender has not only cemented his place in one of Europe’s top leagues but has also stood toe-to-toe with the world’s greatest players.
In this exclusive with SportsBoom.com, Sanusi opens up about his time in Portugal, his most memorable moments on the pitch, and the pride he feels representing Nigeria.
Life in Portugal: A Defender’s Evolution
Sanusi’s move to FC Porto in 2020 was a dream come true for the talented left-back. The move to one of Europe’s elite sides in the Portuguese Primeira Liga has been transformative for his career.
“My time in Portugal has been amazing,” Sanusi shares. “Porto is like a second home to me now. The club has such a rich history, and the fans are incredible. I’ve learned so much, both as a player and as a person. Every match is a lesson, and every day I’m growing.”
Reflecting on his journey, he credits the coaching staff and his teammates for their role in his development. “Porto has given me the platform to showcase my abilities, and I’ll forever be grateful for that.”
The Match That Defined Him
For Sanusi, one match stands out as the pinnacle of his time at Porto so far. “Without a doubt, my most memorable game was in the Champions League against Marseille. It is still fresh in my memory; we won 2-0,” he recalls.
Played on the 25th of November 2020 he also scored his first goal in the same game opening a 2–0 win at Olympique de Marseille in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, and was also named in the tournament's Team of the Week.
The intensity of such matches, he says, pushes players to their limits and helps them evolve.
Facing the World's Best
As a defender in Europe, Sanusi has had the unenviable task of marking some of the most lethal strikers in the game. When asked about the most challenging opponent he’s faced, he didn’t hesitate.
“In all my football career, I can't meet a striker who challenges me beyond Federico Chiesa from Juventus,” he says with a wry smile. “Chiesa can mark and attack , despite I'm also good at both, yet he challenges me a lot.”
But it’s not just Federico Chiesa. Sanusi has also squared off against Cristiano Ronaldo, arguably the greatest player of all time. “Playing against Ronaldo is a dream and a nightmare at the same time,” he admits.
“He's on another level entirely. Yea, they have their differences; Ronaldo must be given a ball first. Facing him is a challenge I embrace. It makes you better.” On comparing Chiesa and Ronaldo.
Donning the Green and White
While club football has brought him fame and fortune, representing Nigeria remains the ultimate honor for Sanusi. “Whenever I wear the green and white jersey of the Super Eagles, I feel immense pride,” he says, his voice brimming with emotion.
"I feel so great and excited, knowing my family and friends watch me, representing over 200 million people, carrying their hopes and dreams on your shoulders. Every time I step onto the pitch for Nigeria, I give everything because I know how much it means to our people.”
The Road Ahead
As Zaidu Sanusi continues to make waves in Europe, he remains grounded and focused on improving his craft. With aspirations to win more silverware with Porto and help Nigeria secure international glory, the defender’s journey is far from over.
“I’m just getting started,” he says with quiet confidence. “There’s so much more to achieve, and I’m ready for whatever comes next.”
From Jega and Kebbi streets to Champions League nights, Zaidu Sanusi’s story is a testament to hard work, resilience, and the boundless potential of Nigerian football.
