Meanwhile, Mallorca come into this clash following back-to-back losses at the hands of Villarreal (4-0), and Real Betis (0-1). Diego Simeone’s men have let their lead at the summit of La Liga slip, going winless in the last two weeks, cruelly letting down online sports betting enthusiasts, however, with the opportunity to regain control coming up next weekend when they travel to the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for a top-of-the-table match against Real Madrid, we’re set for a thrilling rollercoaster during the business end of the campaign in La Liga.

Mallorca will aim to spoil Atletico Madrid’s party after consecutive losses to Villarreal and Real Betis has seen Jagoba Arrasate’s charges fall from fifth to sixth position on the table. Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have the same mandate in La Liga, arresting their own poor dip in form to get back on track of claiming their ultimate target – being crowned 2024/25 La Liga champions.

ATLETICO MADRID: CURRENT FORM – DLWWW
Diego Simeone’s plan to rotate the squad and leave key players out of the starting XI backfired against Villarreal last time out. Antoine Griezmann, Rodrigo De Paul and Samuel Lino were among the substitutes as Villarreal captain, Gerard Moreno, won and converted a first-half penalty to force Simeone’s hand into making second-half changes to bring the regular starters on.
Lino then scored to rescue a point, "I think we were pretty much in control throughout the game. We played with the right attitude and commitment, aiming to win the game," Simeone explained.
"The first half went quite well. They had the penalty and little more. In the second half we played against a team that defended well, with a lot of players and in an organised manner, waiting to counter-attack because they have a lot of fast players and they take advantage of that speed. "We found an equaliser and we continued to play the way we wanted to, going forward. We had more than one situation where we could have won the game. But it wasn't to be..."
‘Los Colchoneros’ will be desperate to put that performance to bed by claiming maximum points in this encounter before making their way to possibly the match of the season in La Liga next Saturday (vs Real Madrid).
Atletico Madrid was in pole position just a few weeks ago, surrendering first position following a pair of unforeseeable upsets suffering defeat away at Leganes (1-0), before last week’s (1-1) stalemate at home against Villarreal.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Julian Alvarez: The former Manchester City striker has arguably been the signing of the season across Europe, forming an almost telepathic partnership with fellow FIFA World Cup gold medallist Antoine Griezmann. Apart from having a killer instinct within the 18-yard area, Alvarez is always willing to run his socks off for the team, initiating the pressing traps set up by Simeone.
- Antoine Griezmann: At 33 years old, Griezmann is still as impactful and influential to Atleti as ever before. His calmness under pressure is second to none, coupled with his vision to create beautiful moments are his biggest attributes, making his front-two duo with Alvarez so dangerous, seeing as the Argentine striker’s strength is running between the channels and using his acceleration to create 1vs1 situations against goalkeepers.
- Rodrigo Riquelme: Resigned to a ‘squad rotation’ player in the first half of the season, Riquelme will be perfect for this encounter with his precision crosses and overlapping runs from the full-back position. Largely to this match being a low-scoring affair with Mallorca expectedly ‘parking the bus’.
ATLETICO MADRID TEAM NEWS
Argentine FIFA World Cup winner Rodrigo De Paul will sit out this match, serving a suspension after tallying five yellow cards in La Liga this season. Veteran defender Javier Galan will also miss this clash, being one month away from full fitness.
MALLORCA: CURRENT FORM – LLWWL
Mallorca need to refocus after a few testing weeks which started by being dumped out of the Copa del Rey by Segunda Division outfit Pontevedra (3-0), then being eliminated in the Spanish Super Cup by Real Madrid (3-0), before suffering back-to-back losses in La Liga to Villarreal and Real Betis.
Jagoba Arrasate needs to inspire ‘Los Bermellones’ to regain their UEFA Europa League position (fifth) after falling to sixth on the standings (UEFA Conference League). Mallorca are usually set up in 4-2-3-1 against the teams in the bottom half of the log.
Switching to 4-4-2 for selected, top-tier opponents, attempting to be as compact as possible between the midfield and defensive lines. Canadian striker Cyle Larin has led the line in recent games with Vedat Muriqi resigned to a bench role after his infamous “middle finger incident”, however, Muriqi has what it takes to get stuck in during a game against hard-hitting Atletico Madrid.
Expect both strikers Larin and Muriqi to start the match, relying on the aerial prowess from set-pieces to bundle home a possible goal.
KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH
- Johan Mojica: The 32-year-old Colombian full-back is blessed with pace, desperately needed to combat Atletico Madrid’s rapid forward line consisting of Angel Correa and Julian Alvarez.
- Pablo Maffeo: The Argentine right-back will play against many of his countrymen within Simeone’s ranks at Atleti. Maffeo has scintillating speed in attacking transitions and overlapping runs with the intent to cross the ball onto the heads of Mallorca’s pair of imposing strikers.
- Vedat Muriqi: The Kosovan striker will be the biggest threat for Atletico Madrid defenders to deal with, standing at 194cm. Defensive duo Axel Witsel and Robin Le Normand will surely have their hands full.
MALLORCA TEAM NEWS
Midfielder Omar Mascarell will be unavailable, serving a suspension after picking up a red card against Real Betis. Manu Morlanes (knee injury) remains a long-term absentee with defender Valery expected to return after a short spell out with illness.
PREDICTED LINE-UPS
Atletico Madrid: 4-4-2
Oblak; Riquelme, Le Normand, Witsel, Lino; Llorente, Gallagher, Koke, Correa; Griezmann, Alvarez.
Mallorca: 4-4-2
Greif; Maffeo, Valjent, Raillo, Mojica; Rodriguez, Costa, Navarro, Darder; Larin, Muriqi.
SUGGESTED BETS
If you love betting on La Liga, here are some bets you can place at some of the top football betting sites.
Both Teams to Score: No. Atletico Madrid haven’t conceded to Mallorca in their last three meetings. Safe and smart bet. (49/100 with Betway) (49/100 with Stake) (49/100 with 1Win)
Under 2.5 Goals: Based on the same reasoning, this bet seems very appealing. (66/100 with Betway) (66/100 with Stake) (66/100 with 1Win)
Double Chance and Overs/Unders (Total 2.5): Atletico Madrid/Draw & Under 2.5 is a promising option, after taking a look at recent form and head-to-head meetings. (87/100 with Betway) (85/100 with Stake) (85/100 with 1Win)
VALUE BETS
Atletico Madrid Win to Nil: Simeone’s team run a tight ship defensively, rarely conceding on home soil. This seems the best bet among all options. (83/100 with Betway) (80/100 with Stake) (80/100 with 1Win)
Multigoals – 1-2: This could prove to be a profitable strategy within this match, expected to be low scoring. (95/100 with Betway)(95/100 with Stake) (95/100 with 1Win)
Julian Alvarez – Anytime Goalscorer: The Argentine striker is lethal in front of the net, having an unselfish strike partner like Griezmann who’s looking to assist more than score. This is well worth a punt. (141/100 with Betway) (140/100 with Stake) (140/100 with 1Win)
PREDICTION: ATLETICO MADRID TO WIN TO NIL
Seeing as Mallorca has failed to score in consecutive defeats, while the past three meetings between these rivals have ended with Atletico Madrid reigning victorious, by a 1-0 scoreline each time. There seems great value in Atletico Madrid keeping a clean sheet on home soil, collecting maximum points as the perfect preparation to lock horns with defending champions Real Madrid.
