La Liga: Sevilla vs Espanyol Preview

Sevilla, which is in 11th place, will host 18th-placed Espanyol in the La Liga, on Saturday, January 25 at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. Sevilla is trying to patch a positive run of results, with the aim of reaching the European qualifications places. This is after a mediocre start of the season that has left them languishing in the bottom half of the standings. On the other hand, Espanyol ended a five-game winless streak by claiming an important 2-1 home win against fellow relegation contenders, Real Valladolid. Espanyol are looking to escape the relegation zone and secure another season in the Primera Division.

Sevilla have been utterly dominant in their recent matchups with Espanyol, registering four wins and a draw. Sevilla will be looking to complete the seasonal double and prolong their three-match La Liga winning streak against Espanyol, after dominating them to a comfortable 2-0 away win at the RCDE Stadium on October 25th.

Sevilla Current Form (La Liga) – WDLWL

The recent fixture list has been brutal for Sevilla, as they have faced La Liga title favourites Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, as well as Valencia, who are currently struggling, but were once a powerhouse and a top-four rival from seasons past.

Their contests against the Madrid clubs were highly entertaining and illuminated attacking prowess, often associated with La Liga, although in the end, they lost 4-2 and 4-3 respectively. In their matchup against Valencia, Sevilla needed last-minute heroism from substitute left-back, Adrià Pedrosa, in the 93rd minute to salvage a point.

Sevilla also claimed valuable wins against Celta Vigo and Girona, the latter being a 2-1 away win last weekend.

Garcia Pimienta’s men will hope to kick start a winning run and surge upwards on the congested table that has witnessed tight competition for European qualification. The sleeping giants have experienced disappointing seasons after being European giants for much of the 21st century.

Their dominance over Espanyol will surely continue, with their opponents fighting to escape the relegation zone and their vibrant and electric home ground offering a significant boost for the Los Nervionenses.

Key Players to Watch

  • Dodi Lukebakio: Dodi Lukebakio has been a livewire for Sevilla from the right-wing position. His Marauding runs and powerful left foot have been integral in Sevilla’s surge in form. The Belgian international is Sevilla’s top goal scorer in La Liga, with a tally of nine goals in 20 matches.
  • Saul Niguez: Saul Niguez has slowly rebuilt his career in Seville. Once heralded as the next Spanish midfield superstar, his career to a drastic decline due to niggling injuries and fitness issues. His loan spell with Sevilla has been a blessing in disguise, as he has been able to get consistent minutes. Saul is the team’s leading assist-getter, with four for the season.
  • Loïc Badé: Loïc Badé is a key defensive linchpin for this new Sevilla side. Badé is blessed with impeccable physicality and height, that have enabled him to be a strong threat aerial in both boxes. He is a defender who’s comfortable progressing the ball from the back and has decent pace.

Sevilla Team News

Adrià Pedrosa and Isaac Romero are suspended for this fixture while Valentin Barco and Tanguy Nianzou are sidelined with injuries.

Espanyol Current Form (La Liga) – WDLDD

Espanyol has had a difficult season since its promotion from the Segunda Division. They have lost 11 matches, won four and drawn five. However, in their recent five matches, they have only lost once with most of their results being draws.

Espanyol drew 0-0 with Osasuna, following it up with a 1-1 draw against Valencia and a disappointing 1-0 away loss to Las Palmas. They followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Leganes before finally registering their fourth win of the season against bottom-of-the-table Real Valladolid in a 2-1 home victory.

Espanyol has patched up their leaky defence that has so far 32 goals, which is tied for third worst in the league. However, their struggles in front of goal are wanting. Their recent games have been tight nicked with an emphasis on defensive rigidity and solidarity over advanced open play.

They will have to be alert against an attacking Sevilla side that has had their number in their recent encounters if they are to walk away with anything from the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

Key Players to Watch

  • Javier Puado: Puado has been a reliable goal-scoring threat for Espanyol despite receiving limited service from the team. He is the team’s leading goal scorer and if they are to survive the drop this season, every goal he contributes will be crucial.
  • Alex Kral: He has been a mainstay in the struggling Espanyol side. His engine and tenacity provide a spark from the middle of the pitch such that his teammates rally behind him despite the challenging storm in the team.
  • Leandro Cabrera: Espanyol has been largely inconsistent at the back but their recent performances have displayed a stable defensive unit. This in part, is due to the experience of Cabrera, who has provided veteran leadership and grit that steers the whole team to defend as a unit.

Espanyol Team News

Aside from José Gragera who has a finger injury, Espanyol have a clean bill of health.
