Villarreal vs RCD Mallorca Preview

Not much separates these two teams at the time of writing. Villarreal and Mallorca are tied on points, and the former has the chance to put some space over their visitors before the game takes place, in their encounter against Real Sociedad, which precedes this one.

Mallorca have a better run than Villarreal, with three wins in five games, compared to Villarreal’s sole win. The latter, despite being in a good position, fifth, have not been on song and will be looking to improve, by winning more points to help them hold on to their Europa League spot.

Pre-Game Odds and Win Probability: Bookies Back Villarreal

  1. Home: 63/100 (1.63) 61.3%

  2. Draw: 57/20 (3.85) 26%

Head-to-Head record

Home advantage did not work to Mallorca’s advantage the last time they played Villarreal, and they will be looking to do better on the road this time. Overall, both teams are equal in head-to-head ties, with two wins each, and a draw.

Last 5 Meetings

  1. 14/09/24: Mallorca 1-2 Villarreal

  2. 20/01/24: Villarreal 1-1 Mallorca

  3. 18/08/23: Mallorca 0-1 Villarreal

  4. 18/02/23: Mallorca 4-2 Villarreal

  5. 06/11/22: Villarreal 0-2 Mallorca

Villarreal Current Form – WDLLD

Despite a poor run of form, in which stringing a decent run of wins has been difficult, Villarreal find themselves in the top five in La Liga, two points ahead of Girona and tied on thirty with their visitors at the time of writing. Their game with Mallorca will be preceded by a Monday night clash on January 13th with Real Sociedad, and a good result in that game will see them open a gap before their meeting.

Their manager will be looking for a change of fortunes coming into this encounter and will rely heavily on striker, Thierry Barry, who scored thrice in their last game of 2024, helping them secure three points after a five-game run that did not produce a win.

Key Players to Watch

  • Alex Baena: Nine goal contributions so far this season for Alex Baena makes him a key figure in the squad. His creative role and ability to provide assists will make things difficult for Mallorca.
  • Logan Cost: Mallorca are the second lowest scoring team in the top ten after Real Sociedad and will not pose much of a threat on the day if Logan Costa leads the backline resolutely.
  • Pau Cabanes: Cabanes will be looking to repay the manager for the faith he has shown in him with a satisfactory performance. If he is given a chance on the day, we tip him to be a key player for Villarreal.

Villarreal Team News

Villarreal are without any suspended players at the time of writing, while two players remain out on long-term injuries. Goalkeeper Diego Conde is expected to be back towards the end of January.

Mallorca Current Form – WWLLW

Mallorca are the better formed team compared to Villarreal. They have nine points from a possible fifteen after beating Getafe, Girona, and Valencia by very tight margins. They won 1-0 and 2-1 twice against the respective teams alluded to and are sitting comfortably in a UEFA Conference spot, two points ahead of Girona.

Their recent results away from home could do with some improvement and some consistency. Overall, they have won five and lost four away from home, with their best run being three consecutive wins against Osasuna, Leganes, and Real Betis.

Key Players to Watch

  • Daniel Rodriguez: Naturally a midfielder, Daniel Rodriguez plays much higher up in a 4-4-2 and assists more than he scores, with four assists so far in La Liga. His partnership with Larin has the potential to cause problems for Villarreal.
  • Cyle Larin: The forward scored the solitary goal in their 1-0 win over Getafe and will be motivated to increase his tally of five in la Liga.
  • Johan Mojica: The hosts are a free-scoring team and will need to be halted by a strong defense. Johan Mojica will play a key role in his team’s defense.

Mallorca Team News

Vedat Muriqi is still out serving a suspension for a direct red card he got for a serious tackle on an opponent against Girona in their penultimate game of 2024 in La Liga. Jagoba Arrasate has a full complement squad to choose from, barring the suspended Muriqi.

Predicted Line-ups

  1. Villarreal: 4-4-2

Reis, Cardona, Costa, Albiol, Femenia, Suarez, Gueye, Comesana, Cabanes, Barry, Baena

  2. Mallorca: 4-4-2

Greif, Maffeo, Valjent, Copete, Mojica, Sanchez, Morlanes, Mascarell, Darder, Larin, Rodriguez

Suggested Bets

We predict there to be a decent number of goals, and therefore, chose goal markets for our suggested bets of

  1. Total Goals – Over 1.5: The indications of there being goals in this match are plenty. In their last five La Liga games, Villarreal have played out to games with a minimum of two or more, whilst, Mallorca have done so in four out of five games. Their head-to-head record is similar, with four out of five games ending with two or more goals. (2/5 with N1Bet).

  2. First Half Total Goals – Over 0.5: A likely outcome since goals feature a lot in this fixture. A goal from either team in the first half will set you up for a win. (47/100 with N1Bet).

  3. First Team to Score – Villarreal: Home team advantage is a consideration in our assessment of this market. If Villarreal come out strongly on the day, with the hosts sitting back, then the outcome is likely to happen. (1/2 with N1Bet).

Value Bets

Our second value comes highly recommended with proper analysis, be sure to consider it in your bet.

  1. First Half Mallorca Total Goals – Over 0.5: Mallorca have a particularly good scoring record against Villarreal, with eight goals scored in five games. The latter and the host’s poor defensive record this season are some of the considerations we used to pick this market. (21/10 with N1Bet).

  2. Match Result – Mallorca: In comparison to what the odds reflect, the chances of the visitors beating Villarreal are possible. The two teams are on equal points at the time of writing, only separated by goal difference, and overall, the head-to-head record is equal with two wins each and a draw in the last five. (49/10 with Sportsbet.io).

  3. First Half Both teams to Score – Yes: The likelihood of the match going into half-time at 1-1 is high in our assessment. Villarreal have one of the worst defenses in La Liga but score just as much, and as such, we believe both teams will score in the first 45 minutes. (49/10 with Sportsbet.io).

Prediction: Villarreal/Mallorca Win and Under 4.5 Goals

The teams are equal in terms of form and abilities, despite the bookies favouring Villarreal. We, therefore, predict a Double Chance outcome for either team or an under 4.5 goals total because we think the game will be tight. (47/100 with Betway).
