Everton vs Tottenham Preview

Tottenham travel to Goodison Park to face Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. Tottenham are keen to get back to winning ways in the Premier League after a four-match winless run. Spurs have had better luck in their cup competitions easily sailing through into the fourth-round of the FA cup and claiming a 1-0 home win against Liverpool in the first leg of the EFL that may prove crucial. On the other hand, Everton have steadily navigated a tough set of fixtures but two consecutive losses saw them part ways with manager Sean Dyche.

Everton are on an eight-game winless run against Tottenham in all competitions and will be keen to turn the tides when they lock horns for a last time at the historic Goodison Park. The Toffees will be moving into their new state of the art stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock in Liverpool. Tottenham thrashed Everton 4-0 in their last clash on August 24th.

Everton Current Form (Premier League) – LLDDD

After a dismal performance in their one-nil loss against Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium, new club owners the Friedkin Group decided to sack manager Sean Dyche. A return of David Moyes to the club which he was in charge for 11 years is sure to brighten up the fans and bring stability as they look to escape the relegation battle.

Everton managed to deny the big boys wins, claiming consecutive nil-nil draws against Arsenal and Chelsea before registering a 1-1 draw against reigning champions Manchester City. However, consecutive defeats to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth erased the progress culminating in Dyche’s dismissal.

This fixture has seen Everton have little to smile about, with their eight game winless streak a pain to a many Toffee fans. However, Moyes will quickly look to avenge the 4-0 nil thrashing they received at Tottenham earlier in the season as they look to look to claim points that will be crucial for Premier League survival.

Key Players to Watch

  • Jarrad Branthwaite: Jarrad Branthwaite has been colossus for the Everton since returning from injury. The towering center-back has been instrumental in helping patch up the leaky defense and his battle with Dominic Solanke will be a sight to behold.
  • Abdoulaye Doucouré: Abdoulaye Doucouré is a mainstay for Everton’s midfield. The all-action midfielder’s tenacity and industrious energy has been one of the few positive sights for Toffee faithful in an otherwise gloomy season. He will once again be called to the fore to produce a dominant display against the Spurs.
  • Iliman Ndiaye: Iliman Ndiaye has finally settled after his summer move from French giants Olympique Marseille. The Senegalese international is capable of playing across the frontline but has settled on the left wing where his inside darts have been a livewire for Everton.

Everton Team News

Armando Broja picked up a knock against Bournemouth and is expected to return in late January, 2025. Dwight McNeil should be back in action as well, but it may be a little too soon for the likes of James Garner and Tim Iroegbunam.

Tottenham Current Form (Premier League) –  LDLLW

Tottenham have been disappointing to say the least. Although they have been excellent going forward, netting 42 times, second only to Liverpool (47), their porous defense has been horrendous to watch. Their defense has leaked goals, conceding 30 compared to just 25 from Everton who are 16th on the standings. The Lilywhites have won just two of their last 10 Premier League matches and have slipped to 12th in the table as a result, 12 points adrift of the Champions League places.

Injuries to key personnel in defense have contributed to this dreadful form and manger Ange Postecoglou will be looking into the transfer market to address this plight before their season falls out of place.

Tottenham have been rather dominant in this fixture over the recent match ups and they will be looking to continue the trend. However, Spurs have met stubborn resistance at Goodison Park in recent years but they are still unbeaten against Everton in their last nine meetings in normal time. Tottenham’s last visit to Goodison Pack saw both teams share the spoils with after a 2-2 draw.

Key Players to Watch

  • Dominic Solanke: Dominic Solanke has decently filled Harry Kane’s big boots. The English international is a fantastic target man who possess a good touch and an underrated pace. He will be a constant menace in Everton’s penalty box on open play and set piece.
  • James Maddison: James Maddison is among the best playmakers in the Premier League. He is the leading scorer for Tottenham and has a knack for finding teammates in dangerous positions for easy goal scoring opportunities. The dead ball specialist will be looking to leave a mark on this game.
  • Dejan Kulusevski: Dejan Kulusevski is a prolific scorer for Spurs. He is capable of playing everywhere across the frontline and in midfield although he has been devastating from the right flank for Tottenham. Kulusevski’s deadly link up play is sure to trouble Everton’s defense.

Tottenham team news

Ben Davies, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison all have a chance of returning for this match, while Mikey Moore and Fraser Forster should both return from illness well in advance. However, Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert are out until February, while Guglielmo Vicario won’t return until March at the earliest.

Predicted Line-Ups

  1. Everton: 4-2-3-1

Pickford; Young, Tarkowski, Branthwaite, Mykolenko; Mangala, Gueye; Ndiaye, Doucouré, Harrison; Calvert-Lewin

  2. Tottenham: 4-2-3-1

Forster; Porro, Dragusin, Romero, Spence; Bissouma, Bentancur; Kulusevski, Maddison, Son; Solanke

Prediction: Tottenham to Win or Draw

This game is likely to be a tight contest. Everton is expected to engage a constricting formation that minimizes chances for goals hence the game may result in a draw, especially if Tottenham’s attack is unable to penetrate their opponents defense. However, there is a minimal chance for Tottenham to capitalize on their attack to secure a win.
