Returning to the top-flight after 22 years away was always going to be a hard task for The Tractor Boys.
Despite recently earning four valuable points from West London clubs Fulham (2-2) and Chelsea (2-0), they just crashed at home to Brighton this week with a 2-0 defeat in front of their faithful yet fearful fans.
They have only won three games all season and are perilously positioned in the drop zone in 18th position, sharing the same points and goal difference as Wolves.
Their ‘six-pointer’ win over relegation rivals Wolves on December 14 was a pivotal moment for Ipswich and offered a glimmer of hope, but has since been overturned, as the team they defeated have gone on to win against Leicester and Man Untied, plus a valuable draw away to Tottenham, with new manager Vitor Pereira boosting the players, who are finding form and confidence at a critical time. However, two 3-0 defeats in a row have kept Wolves tied with Ipswich in the league, so the two teams are battling against each other for survival.
Ipswich have already lost 4-1 away to Man City this season, so they may have a better chance against the reigning champions at home, but their record at Portman Road doesn’t suggest so. They have only won once at home all season and have the third worst home record in the league.
That home win was against Chelsea in the last game of 2024, where their main man Liam Delap scored a penalty in the 12th minute and set up ex-Chelsea player Omari Hutchinson to seal victory in the 53rd. Neither one of these goalscorers were even born when Ipswich last won a Premier League match at home, back in 2002.
They registered a 3-0 over Bristol Rovers, who are 20th in League One, to advance to the FA Cup fourth round. This year, Ipswich have won, drawn and lost their three games so far.
Ipswich boss McKenna has shown he has tactical acumen and has been praised for his ability to develop young players, but he faces a tough task to steer the team clear of relegation this season.
Key Players To Watch
- Liam Delap – The son of Rory Delap, Liam was a product of Derby County’s academy, signed at the age of six, staying for 10 years until he was signed by eight-time Premier League winners, Manchester City. He joined newly promoted Ipswich Town in July 2024 for £20 million and has scored eight goals in the league so far, currently the club’s scorer this season.
- Omari Hutchinson – 21-year-old winger Omari Hutchinson recently scored against his old club Chelsea, who released him twice as a child. In his youth career, he played for many other London clubs such as Charlton and Arsenal. He helped Ipswich gain promotion, playing 50 games last season in the Championship as a loanee, scoring 11 goals.
- Sammie Szmodics – The experienced 29-year-old from Colchester joined in the summer and has scored four times in 18 outings for his new club. Having played 142 games for his local team, Colchester, in League One and Two; he advanced upwards to play over 90 Championship games for Blackburn, but this is his first time playing in the Premier League, which he has adapted to extremely well.
Ipswich Team News
Ipswich Town have signed 22-year-old winger Jaden Philogene from Aston Villa. A product of Villa youth, Jaden scored 12 goals in 32 appearances for Hull City last season.
Boss McKenna told BBC Sport that his team “lost belief” in the second-half of their last game against Brighton.
Manchester City loanee Kalvin Phillips is unavailable for selection for Ipswich against his parent club.
Sammy Szmodics and Omari Hutchinson are uncertain, while Conor Chaplin, Axel Tuanzebe and Chiedozie Ogbene remain on the injury list.
Manchester City: Current Form – DWWWDL
Manchester City became the first team to ever win four consecutive league titles last year, but they haven’t been able to maintain that form in the 2024-25 season.
They have won the Premier League six times in the last seven years, but this season has been uncharacteristic for The Citizens after losing six games in their first 17 matches.
They have managed to go unbeaten in their last five games, but prior to that they were beaten by Aston Villa, Manchester United, Juventus, Liverpool, Tottenham twice, Brighton, Sporting CP, and Bournemouth all within 52 days of each other.
They have now gone unbeaten since Boxing Day and appear to be back on track with 17 goals scored in their last five games, which includes their lopsided 8-0 win over League Two outfit Salford City.
However, in their last game against Brentford, Phil Foden netted twice to put City 2-0 up at 78 minutes, only to concede twice in the 82nd and 92nd minutes to throw two points away carelessly. The Bees actually almost won, but missed their chance to put the game to bed.
As Brentford roared into life, Manchester City visibly waned, so they will need to address their fitness issues if they are to seriously mount a challenge for a top four finish this season.
Key Players To Watch
- Phil Foden – Foden scored twice in the last match against Brentford. The 24-year-old playmaker has been at the club since his youth from 2009. This is eighth season in the senior squad and is nearing 100 goals, currently on 94.
- Kevin De Bruyne – 33 from Belgium, De Bruyne is Man City’s midfield maestro and earned his 400th cap in his last game against Brentford this week. He has scored over 100 goals in his 10 seasons with the club.
- Erling Haaland – The 24-year-old Norwegian is a prolific striker with 79 Premier League goals in 87 games for City. In his first season in the Premier League, he broke the record for the most goals scored in a season with 36. Currently, he has scored 111 goals in 126 games for his club.
Manchester City Team News
Manchester City and Eintracht Frankfurt are not far away from agreeing a deal for Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush. The 25-year-old has scored 20 goals already this season.
Goalscorer Phil Foden publicly admitted to the Manchester Evening News that their collapse against Brentford was due to fatigue and physicality.
Top goalscorer Erling Haaland has signed a new 10-year deal, keeping him at the club to 2034.
Key midfielder Rodri is still sidelined with injury, as well as John Stones and Ruben Diaz.
Predicted Line-Ups
Ipswich: 5-4-1
Walton; Burns, O’Shea, Woolfenden, Greaves, Davis; Morsy, Cajuste, Hutchinson, Broadhead; Delap.
Manchester City: 4-2-3-1
Ortega; Lewis, Akanji, Ake, Gvardiol; Silva, Kovacic; Foden, De Bruyne, Savinho; Haaland.

Liam Delap – Anytime Goalscorer: Leading goalscorer for Ipswich, Delap could find the net anytime in the match. (3.75 with 1Win)
Exact Number of Goals – 2: The exact number of goals to be scored could be worth a bet. (4.69 with 1Win)
Prediction: Manchester City to Win
With just three wins in 20 matches, it’s hard to see Ipswich being able to overcome the might of Manchester City, despite possessing the home advantage, which this season’s stats show doesn’t really give them any advantage at all.
They have already taken a 4-1 beaten from The Blues earlier in the season. Although they are nowhere near as strong as last season, the current titleholders will still have enough strength and danger to deal with the home side on this Sunday afternoon.
Going on quality and form, we predict Manchester City to win 2-0 or more.
