Southampton have had a baptism of fire after being promoted to the promised land at the start of the season. The Saints sit rock-bottom of the league, having won just once all season and are fighting for their lives.

A set of five successive defeats over their previous five games has allowed 19th-placed Leicester City to put some daylight between themselves and the last-placed outfit.

On the flip side, Newcastle have found form at the right time of the season. The Magpies are fifth in the league and are level with fourth-place Manchester City.

A series of consecutive wins in the league and cup was brought to a halt last time out against a red-hot Bournemouth, but Eddie Howe’s team look like an entertaining outfit as we enter crunch time in the Premier League.

Southampton Current Form – LLLLLL

Southampton have shown flashes of brilliance since returning to the Premier League but have been far off the level required. The performances have been there, they went one nil up at Old Trafford and also managed to score twice past a Nottingham Forest team recently so there is some grit about them.

Their form of five consecutive defeats makes for bad reading though and the visitors will be coming to Saint Mary’s licking their lips at the prospect of claiming all three points.

Key Players to Watch

  • Adam Armstrong: The Saints hitman was their leading goal scorer in the Championship last season but has found it tough going in the Premier League. With just two goals and two assists to his name in 19 appearances, the Englishman needs to reimagine the form that set the Championship ablaze.
  • Aaron Ramsdale: The former Arsenal shot-stopper has had a difficult spell at St. Mary’s this campaign but has made some vital stops for his team. His Premier League experience is key for the Saints and if they are to mount a late charge for survival, they will need to rely on the 26-year-old between the sticks.
  • Kyle Walker-Peters: The exciting full-back can play on either wing and loves to bomb forward. Primarily used at right back, the Englishman has been ever-present for his team this season, playing all but two games in the Premier League for the Saints.

Southampton Team News

Southampton will be without club captain Jack Stephens (knock), Ross Stewart (Muscle), Gavin Bazunu (Achilles Tendon) and the impressive Tyler Dibling who has an ankle problem.

Newcastle United Current Form – WWWWL

The visitors have been one of the form teams in the league. A series of four wins in a row came to a halt emphatically at home to Bournemouth but the recent form has been very encouraging. The Magpies are tied with Manchester City on points, with just goal difference separating them from a Champions League place. They also boast the league’s most in-form striker, Alexander Isak, who has found a purple patch of form at the right time for his club.

Key Players to Watch

  • Alexander Isak: The tall, lanky forward has been setting the Premier League alight with his performances of late and his stats speak for itself. An impressive 15 goals and five assists is a testament to his all-round ability as a striker, not just capable of finishing, but the 25-year-old can make goals too! He will be raring to go to add to his tally against a poor Saints defence.
  • Bruno Guimarães: The midfield enforcer for the Magpies is a sumptuous footballer for someone who is supposed to be the destroyer in midfield. Blessed with Brazilian flair, he sets the tone for Newcastle to play and often runs games himself.
  • Kieran Trippier: Known for his set-piece deliveries, the Englishman’s ability to contribute at both ends of the field makes him an invaluable asset to Howe’s technical team.

Newcastle United Team News

Jamaal Lascelles and Nick Pope miss out with knee injuries and are the long-term absentees in the squad, alongside Callum Wilson who is nursing a hamstring injury. Fabian Schar who was sidelined with illness should recover in time to face the Saints.

Predicted Line-Ups

  1. Southampton: 4-2-3-1: Ramsdale; Walker-Peters, Bednarek, Harwood-Bellis, Bree; Sugawara, Downes; Aribo, Archer, Fernandes; Armstrong

  2. Newcastle United: 4-3-3: Dubravka; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Hall; Tonali, Guimarães, Joelinton; Murphy, Isak, Gordon

  1. Both Teams to Score: Both teams have shown the ability to score, making this a likely scenario. (3/5 with Betway)

  2. Over 2.5 Goals: Given the offensive capabilities and recent head-to-head records, goals seem on the cards. (9/20 with 888Starz), (47/100 with N1Bet)

  3. Newcastle United to Win: Considering their form and historical advantage over Southampton. (9/20 with Stake), (2/5 with BetWinner)

Value Bets

  1. Newcastle United to Score In Both Halves: The Magpies have been free-scoring recently and with Southampton leaking goals, the visitors to score in both halves is good value. (97/100 with Betway), (33/25 with 1xBet)

  2. Alexander Isak Anytime Goalscorer: The Swede has been in clinical form in front of goal and will want to add to his tally against the team in last place in the league. (9/10 with Betandyou), (11/10 with 1xBet)

  3. Over 1.5 Goals in the First Half: The visitors have managed to find the net with regularity of late and expect them to start the game quickly out of the blocks. (6/5 with Stake),  (11/10 with BC.Game)

Prediction: Newcastle and Both Teams to Score

The Magpies look like a banker here. Howe and co have managed to turn the corner since the start of December and go on a run of victories, albeit getting humbled against Bournemouth, the Toon Army looks too strong for the stumbling Saints.

As damning as that sounds, we do believe the home team may have a goal in them. Rooted to the bottom of the table and low on confidence, the writing is on the wall for the home team.
