Poland will begin their quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament playing host to their neighbours Lithuania in a UEFA Group G match where Robert Lewandowski and company are the clear favourites.

The visitors have been poor going by recent results, losing six consecutive matches. Meanwhile, Poland will be aiming to achieve better performances, leading to more positive results compared to their meagre attempts in their most recent UEFA Nations League adventure.

POLAND: CURRENT FORM – LLDLL

Poland does not enter this game in the best of form under Michal Probierz. The Eagles are winless in their last five games, losing four times. The dismal run started with back-to-back defeats against Croatia and Portugal.

Their next game, however, provided plenty of promise as they scored three goals in their home tie against the Croats. While they could only manage a draw in that game as Croatia also netted three times, it was back to consecutive losses as a trip to Portugal ended in a heavy 5-1 thumping while they slumped to a 2-1 defeat against Scotland last time out.

The Eagles will be desperate to stop the rot and a home meeting against minnows Lithuania could see them do just that.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Robert Lewandowski: The veteran striker’s role at Barcelona and for his nation is very similar, helping the next generation of players become better with every training session and match on offer. Lewandowski’s nine goals in 10 UEFA Champions League games have helped Barca reach the quarter-final stage while being La Liga’s top goal scorer (ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappe) with the Catalans in pole position in the Spanish title race.
  • Krzysztof Piatek: The former AC Milan striker has been in sensational form for Istanbul Basaksehir in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring 18 league goals (top goalscorer ahead of Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen). He has found the back of the net five times in six appearances during their UEFA Conference League group campaign.
  • Jakub Moder: Since making the switch in January from English Premier League’s Brighton to Feyenoord in the Eredivisie, Moder has found his feet as a regular for his new club. He registered his first goal from the penalty spot at the San Siro against Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League.

POLAND TEAM NEWS

Poland will welcome back spearhead Robert Lewandowski after the striker missed the last two matches against Portugal and Scotland with a back problem. Meanwhile, Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski will miss the opportunity to earn his 100th cap for his nation after picking up a calf injury and is the most notable member left out of the squad to take on Lithuania and Malta.

LITHUANIA: CURRENT FORM – LLLLL

Lithuania, ranked 142nd in the latest FIFA ranking, will be looking to put their past UEFA Nations League campaign behind them after suffering six defeats in six matches against fellow minnows Romania, Kosovo and Cyprus.

This doesn’t bode well for their chances of beating 35th-ranked Poland, captained by one of the most clinical strikers across European football, with his understudies also in fine form for their respective clubs.

Lithuania’s last competitive wins were beating 196th-ranked Gibraltar home and away, both by a 1-0 scoreline, with striker Armandas Kucys and captain Fedor Cernych finding the back of the net for the Rinktine.

Manager Edgaras Jankauskas’ troops last commanded a respectable victory 18 months ago away in Bulgaria (0-2) who are ranked 82nd, with goals by Maribor defender Pijus Sirvys either side of the half-time whistle.

KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH

  • Armandas Kucys: The Rinktine striker has been in exceptional form for Slovenian club NK Celje with the 22-year-old scoring six goals from seven UEFA Conference League matches. He inspired his club to qualify for the quarter-finals, setting up a clash with Italian club Fiorentina while finding the net nine times in league action.
  • Gvidas Gineitis: The 20-year-old midfielder is another promising young player, plying his trade for Torino in the Italian Serie A. The 191cm tall midfielder will be aiming to replicate his club heroics for his country, recently making headlines after smartly getting on the end of a quickly taken free-kick to score the winning goal, causing a shock upset against AC Milan.
  • Fedor Cernych: The Kauno Zalgiris forward is three appearances away from becoming the first Lithuanian footballer to reach 100 caps while being four goals away from equalling the country’s top goal scorer (19 goals) and former president of Lithuania Tomas Danilevicius. The experience of captain Cernych will be vital to helping young talents like Kucys and Gineitis acclimate to international football.

LITHUANIA TEAM NEWS

Istanbulspor midfielder Modestas Vorobjovas is doubtful for this clash with FK Zalgiris’ Giedrius Matulevicius expected to play alongside Gvidas Gineitis in the heart of the Lithuanian midfield.

  2. Poland To Score in Both Halves - Yes: Lithuanian defenders are in for a long 90 minutes, unable to keep a clean sheet in their last seven matches, therefore, this option offers enough value. (71/100 with Betway) (71/100 with Stake) (70/100 with Betfred)

  3. Poland Total Over 2.5 Goals: With striker Lewandowski and Piatek scoring for fun every week for their clubs, Poland to score three goals or more is well worth the punt. (82/100 with Betway) (81/100 with Stake) (80/100 with BetWinner)

  2. Poland To Win Both Halves - Yes: There is an element of risk for this option if Lithuania has a strong first half, however, we expect Poland to dominate proceedings from the onset. (104/100 with Betway) (103/100 with Stake) (105/100 with BetWinner)

  3. Both Halves Over 1.5 Goals - Yes: In search of the most value on offer, we come across this lucrative bet with a minimum of two goals required in both halves, offering a massive payout. (395/100 with Betway) (394/100 with Stake) (393/100 with BetWinner)

PREDICTION: POLAND TO WIN

Poland is expected to dominate Lithuania on home soil. Facing a side ranked over 100 places above them, led by one of the world’s most prolific strikers, could be an insurmountable challenge for the visitors.

The smart choice will be backing the favourites to get their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign off to the perfect start with a resounding victory over Lithuania. For those exploring markets for this game, checking out the best online betting sites could help find the best odds available.
