Cole Palmer Signs Long-Term Extension with Chelsea: A Key Player for the Future

Cole Palmer recently signed a two-year contract extension at Chelsea, keeping him at the club until 2033. The English star initially joined the club on a seven-year deal that would have run until 2031, now extended till 2033. Palmer will be 31 if he stays until the end of his new deal. 

Before we talk about the long-term contract, it is important to understand and take a look at the player’s rise and his breakthrough season with Chelsea. The boyhood Manchester United fan, Cole Palmer is actually a Manchester City academy graduate, who has always been highly rated and was always tipped to reach the top of the game. 

Palmer made his first-team debut for Man City in a 3–0 away win over Burnley in the fourth round of the English EFL Cup on 30 September 2020. He scored his first goal for the club on 21 September 2021 in a 6–1 home win over League One team Wycombe Wanderers in the same competition.

He made his first Premier League appearance against Burnley on 16 October 2021. Interesting he played another match that same night, scoring a hattrick for the club’s U23 side. While ist three days later on 19 October, he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal. A few starts and appearances off the bench followed next. Man City won the treble (Premier League, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League) in the same season (2022-23). 

At the start of the 2023-24 season, Palmer scored in the 2023 UEFA Super Cup final and another goal in the Community Shield final against Arsenal in the next match. Football fans were seeing Palmer finally break through and the Cityzens add another potential gem to their evergrowing crown. 

But Palmer was still behind the likes of Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Kevin de Bruyne in the attacking midfield and wing position and with gametime and minutes seemingly limited for the upcoming season, Palmer decided to move away from the Etihad stadium. 

Cole Palmer joins Chelsea on 2023 summer transfer deadline day 

The right-winger got a £40 million transfer from Manchester City on the deadline day of summer 2023. He was not the club’s only signing as the club reportedly spent a whooping £435.5m on transfers during the 2023 summer window and signed a lot of players. The club were also under the leadership of new manager Mauricio Pochettino. 

The whole season was up and down as the club never really managed to get their act together on the pitch, The constant change of players, lack of leadership and the over-reliance on youngsters led the club to an underwhelming season. However, the club did manage to finish sixth in the Premier League table ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Newcastle United. 

The only bright spark in the campaign was the rise of Cole Palmer as the club’s main man. The 22-year-old ended the season with an extraordinary 22 goals and 11 assists in 34 Premier League appearances. Palmer’s season height will definitely be the hat-trick against Manchester United or his goal against former side Man City.

His impressive form in the league, helped him get his first senior call-up and cap in the November 2023 international window. By the end of the season, the Chelsea star was also included in England’s Euro 2024 squad and played a role in the Three Lion’s run to the final of the tournament. 

Cole Palmer signs contract extension at Stamford Bridge 

After returning from the tournament in Germany, the star forward was awarded with a new contract. Upon signing the contract Plamer said: 

“I’m delighted to sign this new deal. I achieved a lot in my first season here and hopefully I can continue to experience great things at this club, both on a personal level and in terms of bringing success and trophies to Chelsea.”

As the 2024-25 season kicks off, the club are still spending an unprecedented amount of money on transfer targets and making a lot of signing. New manager Enzo Maresca looks set for a tough season ahead, but he will certainly be looking towards Cole Palmer to step up again and lead Chelsea back to glory.
