Exclusive: Sheff Wed Goal Hero Windass Reveals Secret to Success this Season
Sheffield Wednesday's goal hero Josh Windass, in the best form of his career, credits his fitness for success. Despite interest from Brazilian giants Santos, Windass is happy at Hillsborough, praising coach Röhl. The team aims for reinforcements to maintain their play-off push, focusing on defensive improvements.
Sheffield Wednesday talisman Josh Windass has revealed the secret to his stellar goal-scoring exploits this season.
Windass, the son of former Hull City, Bradford City and Middlesbrough striker Dean, is in the best form of his Wednesday career.
The 30-year-old has contributed 10 goals and two assists in 24 appearances to help keep Wednesday firmly in the play-off mix.
His latest strike came in the New Year's Day win at home to Derby County where Windass channelled his inner David Beckham and scored from inside his own half.
It was a spectacular way for Windass to score his 50th goal for the club.
Reflecting on his superb form, Windass told Sportsboom.com: "It is down to fitness. I've not been injured yet. I've played in all of the games."
"Usually when I play, I seem to produce good numbers so hopefully I can keep that going."
"I want to keep putting in good performances. It's not necessarily about scoring; I want to do whatever I can to help the team be successful."
"I have been lucky enough in my career to get picked in by most of the teams I've played for. If I'm picked to play, I'm happy."
The forward's impressive performances has caught the eye of Brazilian giants Santos, who recently tabled a six-figure bid for the player.
However, it would be a major surprise if Wednesday cashed in on one of their prized assets in this window.
Windass says he is happy at Hillsborough and is enjoying playing under head coach Danny Röhl, a manager who is really helping bring out the best of his ability.
"He [Röhl] is a great manager and a good person," added Windass.
"He wants the best for everybody in the team. He is tactically the best manager I've played for by a long, long way with the way he sets us up."
“I'm playing in a role where I can get forward and drop in at the same time and get chances."
A run of just one victory from their past four matches over the festive period has seen Wednesday slip to 10th in the table.
PLAY-OFF PUSH
Their recent draw with Millwall left them three points adrift of the play-off places.
Windass admitted: "We seem to get close and fall away at the minute. Hopefully we can go the extra mile and get into those play-off spots where we want to be."
Röhl wants to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes on February 3.
The German has suggested the addition of "impact players" in key areas to help them maintain their promotion push going into the second half of the campaign.
Defensive reinforcements feature high on Röhl's priority list. No team in the top half of the Championship has conceded more goals (40) than Wednesday this season.
Windass said: "It is above my pay grade to comment on where we need to strengthen in the transfer market."
"I'm sure the gaffer knows what he wants to do and will be working hard with the chairman to make it happen."
